    Concerning the Microsoft "Palladium" deal, and the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance:

    {Beware; this is a long article concerning a bit of electroniceze, a whole bunch of legaleze, and a tiny fraction of coding-geekeze}

    I'll sum it up for you:

    "You can play DVDs on a Playstation 2, and you can also run Linux on a Playstation 2 - but you can't do them at the same time. A Playstation 2 with Linux is a preview of TCPA machines to come: you can boot in a less-secure mode and get more general functionality, or you can boot into secure mode but only play DVDs and games that have been approved by Sony."

    Broaden this out to anything you would like. Snes emulators, your "compiled" disk of all the good songs from 10 different cd's that are mostly filled with just terrible songs, Photoshop 5.0 which you refuse to upgrade to Photoshop 7.0 because you hate the new interface, your UBB.classicTM 6.3.1 which you think has less security holes and is smaller/tighter than the new 6.3.2 version, The Darkest Day addon which (although free) did not pay the necessary cash to Microsoft/Intel to make the private code-key list, your new +10 Killsword mod for Icewind Dale 2 which lets all the people who want to roleplay a "Jedi of Faerun" do so, etc...

    It's all fun and games until someone tells you your car is too old to drive on the Autobaun.

    What does everyone (who cares) think of this?
