I just finished Act I and I'm getting really fond of Neeshka, Khelgar, and Qara. Now Act II seems to want me to take Sand. I know that at various points you have to have other NPCs to move the story along. Is Sand one of them and I only need him to become the squire?

I'm also curious about how XP works in this game. It appears that every character has the same XP (if they are with me or not). Does this mean when the screen says I have earned 250xp that everyone earns that or is that number divided by the number of characters. I'm curious if soloing means you can gain levels faster? If you use a party number cheat does that slow everyone's advancement down?

You need Sand in your party for a part of the game, yes (the Ember incident investigation).

As for XP, I'm really not sure, (since I've always played it with a full party) but I think that the size of the party doesn't affect the XP awarded, but instead it has something to do with the average level your party is, in total (you get slightly, just slightly more XP for a kill if you have a lower level party there, then a higher, but these differences are minute).
I think that all the chars get the displayed amount of XP - 250 in your example - also not entirely sure, but it's easy to check in game - just see one of the NPC's XP value before and after a kill and compare the difference with the on screen value of XP awarded. (I would do it myself, but my NWN2 is not installed, atm.)
I do not think that you will gain levels faster by soloing, but I've never tried it, so I'm hardly the expert.
Heh, getting a second, better informed opinion on the XP in general might be best. :)

all npc's and you get the amount displayed wether you solo or not, it dosn't mather. In the oc the npc's will allways have the exact same amount of exp as you and you do not gain it faster alone.
I don't think you actually is forced to take Sand to ember, it is just recommended by the game, since he can represent you during the trial. but try going to Ember if Sand is forced into your party, well then he is needed, if not, it dosn't matter.
