[IMG] Hey, one thing about Archers is that they are effective, but more effective when not on the front lines. Normally, for a balanced party I like to have 2 front-line fighters (tanks), two clerical casters, two magic casters, and a thief. If possible at least one of the clericals, and one of the magicals should be able to reach the highest casting levels. The archer has the disadvantage of being none of these (when I already have to double up on at least one role).

The balanced way for me to do my party then would be
    Minsc (tank)
    Jaheira (tank/clerical)
    Archer
    Anomen (clerical)
    Jan (Thief/Magic)
    Nalia/Imoen (Magic)

(I could use another fighter type instead of Minsc, but I'm not too likely to, he's a fellow ranger, and fun as well.)

However, I have never used Mazzy, and I am toying with using her, and having a really strong missile weapon party.

    Minsc - Longbow
    Jaheira - Best sling
Archer - Longbow (maybe shortbow later)
    Mazzy (shortbow)
    Jan (crossbow)
Aerie (clerical/mage) (sling if not casting)

With 4 fighter types with missile weapons, and two of them experts in the second rank, that's a lot of missile firepower.

Disadvantages: All my mages and clericals are multi-class. I don't know where to put Imoen, when I get her back. Do I replace Mazzy and lose the concept, or replace Jan, and take the drop in Thieving abilities? Or take her long enough to return to Amn, and then swap back? (I don't think a Ranger is going to just abandon his longest companion in Spellhold)

As you can see my goals are to simultaneously make an effective party, role-play and make an interesting party.

I'm curious to hear other people's thoughts on this before I make my decision.

Being multi class isn't that bad, you still can get sufficient spells and in my games i never relied to heavily on spells. If you really want imoen then drop jan for her. Her thieving skills are sufficient so you won't take that big a hit where thieving is concerned. Also archers aren't that bad in the front lines, they can still subsitute as tanks, they're just more deadly in the back.

    I suggest the following party:
    Archer
    Korgan
    Viconia
    Edwin
    Jan
    Minsc

If you want a more goody one:
    Archer
Valigar (or Anomen...but i hate him...)
    Minsc
    Aerie
    Nalia
    Jan
