    I wrote a review on this - didn't like it. Mostly because it could have been so much more - but iits components (ie setting, plot, character) felt disconnected from each other.

    As it was - the setting was relegated to mere colour over which a generic plot was put. You could have had a bug-hunt plot in almost any speculative fiction book - but Perdido Street Station has a unique world and should have taken better advantage of it than that.

    It was very good, but it could have been an all-time classic with a bit more polish.

    That's Mieville's problem, really; he has many moments of near genius, but hasn't yet managed to produce genius. Maybe one day.

    Not that that means he isn't worth reading, mind; he's quite good. Just not as good as he could--or should--be.
