Besides me is there anyone here at the boards that is obsessed with planes in general? I just got satellite installed at my house, and I discovered that there is a Discovery Wings channel...so far it is the most watched channel at my house since I usually have control of the remote.

Not only do these futuristic like fighter jets like the USAF F-22 and the YF-23 amaze me, but so do the awesome planes of WWII. The P-51D Mustang and the P-37 Lightning come to mind.

My dream in life is to be a commercial airline pilot, and one day fly the Concord, since my former dream of being a USAF fighter pilot were squashed due to my asthma.

Are any of you guys like me, who have always built scale model planes and rockets; and always watch the planes, personal or commercial, fly by? :rolling:

i build models (not the kind one can play with but just look at), mainly Gundam series and world war 2 japanese fighters, mainly because that's the two main models genre supplied by my main model retailer. Other that these, no love what so ever for the planes, mainly because of the bad experiences of flying in between u.s. and malaysia which is about 24hrs squeezing in a small seats.

I love planes, especially WW2 military. I live near a warplane museum which is based out of a small airfield. They have several fighters, can't remember which ones right now, and a few larger bombers like a B-25 and a German He-111. The pride and joy of the collection, however is a working, flyable B-17G...it's an absolute beaut and has been maintained impeccably.

On Saturdays they take it up for a flight, in fact you can book a flight on it if you have the spare cash. When that silver beast flies over you...you know it, loud as heck.

It's a strange feeling to look up and see it roaring through the sky...you get a kinda 1944 feeling all up and down your spine.

    Planes are cool.

No can do: got too bad eye-sight (glasses) :(

So that's as much for me and planes, beside travelling.

Well, I wasn't a huge model builder as a kid, but planes were definitely my first love. Especially since my dad is (err, was --> he can't fly anymore, but his trade is still listed as "pilot") a pilot in the Canadian Air Force.

Unfortunately, we've got the same problem Kitrax, my long time dream of becoming a (CF) fighter pilot was also crushed by my asthma.

And living on a military base, I do see lots of aircraft overhead. Although, the base has a terrible runway, so the only time I see any interesting planes is during the annual airshow; most of the time it's just griffons (choppers, essentially just hueys with 4 blades rather than 2) that fly around overhead.

Cool link, Rags. That was a tough quiz...I only got 14 out of 24 on EASY! I did good with all the WW2 aircraft, but I suck at the more modern ones. I did get tricked by one WW2 picture...that of the P-47 with German markings  .

I don't suppose you know any history surrounding that particular photo?

Well, the German Air Force shot a few P-47 down, repaired them and tested them to find their weaknesses. There are also pics of "german" P-38, P-51, Spitfires etc ... ;) that was the business of the iirc KG-200, a special unit flying allied aircraft for various sinister and obvious purposes ...

I used to build WW2 models when I was younger. My favourite ones were Junger 87 Stuka and P-51 Mustang.

    @Hacken Slash

I don't know if this is the same P-47 with the one you saw but here is its story.

Now that is funny. The british got their first FW-190, one of my fav models, the same way. A german pilot lost orientation and landed on a british airfield - and gave the british the opportunity to test and evaluate the dreaded beast that turned the loss to kill ratio over the channel to 1:10 in favor of the German Air Force with its appearance - until the Spitfire Mk.IX ballanced out the scores again.

The best plane in its short time. Supposed to revolutionize the air industry. Put Canada at the top for aviation production. Cost mucho dinero to design and create.

Here is to the Avro Arrow, which, thanks to PM Diefenbaker, it the world's most expensive paper weight.

Well, even though all Concords have been grounded...I still have a lifetime to have them back in the air. I think that once the ecconomy is back on it's feet they'll be put back into service.

Don't give up so so easily! I have 47/20 vision in both eyes but that can be fixed with laser eye sugery.

[edit] If you check out my section at the SP Photo Album you can see three of my model planes. :rolling:

    Nice pics, Kit.

I used to work on stuff like that when I had more time.

I liked especially the wing damage on the A-10 that showed the unpainted metal frame beneath.

I just thought of a question:

Has anyone here ever thought of building their own "flyable" plane? I think it would be an amazing feeling knowing the plane you're flying was built completly by you. I still think the Velocity XL-5 kit plane. :rolling:
