I originally posted this at RPG Codex, but I thought I'd give it a try here, too.

I'm reinstalling PS:T and getting an error message that says "An Assertion failed in D:bad:Torment\Source\chitin\ChDimm.cpp at line number 809." I know I have to edit the ini file, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to change. I've searched for the answer, and there's an Interplay help site that has some Assertion failed errors, but the site doesn't list my particular one. Anyone know what I should do to fix it? Barring that, can someone post the first bit of their PS:T ini file?

What gave you the idea that editing anything in the ini file is going to help with this particular issue?

Anyway, for starters, provide a bit more info. Which version of the game do you have, do you have the official patch installed, have you added any mods, have you modified the game files or your savegames in any way, etc.

I have the two-disc version that was packaged with Soulbringer, which I believe doesn't need the official patch. I deleted all my PS:T files from my hard drive a few months ago, and I'm reinstalling the game now.

Previously, I had the same error, and I think I was able to find a fix that involved modifying the ini file, but after a lengthy search, I haven't been able to find the original information. I think it was a matter of rewriting one or two lines, and I didn't have any more trouble.

The official Interplay site says that Assertion Failed errors for most lines besides 581 and 4215 are caused by missing or corrupted files, but I don't think that's the case here.

When are you getting this error? When you try to start the game? Or once already in the game?

Try deleting everything in the game's cache directory and then running the game.

I'm getting it when I choose "Play" after I insert the CD or when I select the Planescape program file.

I deleted everything from Planescape's cache folder, but I'm still getting the same error.

That thread describes the exact same issue, though with no apparent resolution unfortunately. You could try uninstalling the game, deleting anything left in the install directory and reinstalling, though that's a longshot.

Here's my torment.ini, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing here that could help you with your issue:

Thanks, Taluntain! You provided me with what I needed.

Edit: I found this fix at the GameBanshee forums.
