Would I be missing out if I didn't beat IWD1 before playing IWD2? I'd like to get into the new features that IWD2 has due to using the D&D 3E rule set. I have the IWD collection, and I've started on IWD1 but I haven't gotten very far.

well, i think you wouldnt understand some references and recognize some NPC appearing again which could be less fun, depends on how and why you play such a game. i'd say finish iwd1 first.

playing IWD1 isnt really essential. You can pick up most of it all from the beginning of IWD2, where there are a couple of "history of the 10 towns" type books about.

I'd personally play IWD1 first for 2 reasons. 1. the transition from 1 to 2 will look a hell of a lot better than 2 to 1.

    2. There are some references that are used, and the odd familiar map, that can be nice to see how it is altered.

Other than that, it doesnt really matter that much.

Also, transition to an earlier version of the game engine isn't as nice as from earlier to later. Things you aren't able to do etc.

IWD I had a better story.
IWD II can get boring quite more often than the original.
So maybe you wanna save IWD II for later so atleast the comparisions with the previous maps gives some relief.
