Playing SoA with ToB installed

I'm still far from finishing SoA, but i installed ToB to use TaB, err, i mean tab {see my crying emoticon thread}. Now, when i start the game and choose SoA, it asks me to put CD2 of SoA in drive E. I don't have a drive E, and just putting it in D doesn't work. So i break out Daemon Tools, make me a virtual drive E, copy everything from the CD and turn it into an image, which i mount to that virtual E. I start the game, and what does it say? "Wring CD in drive F, insert CD 2 into drive F". Oooo-kayyy, so i create a drive F, and mount the image i made to that drive as well. Will it dare request it in drive G now? Nope, it still demands it in F, ignoring its presence there. Did i ever tell you how much i H8 computers?
Advices, anyone? Please?

 

That's why I use full install. Have you tried starting the game via CD2? (I.E. put the CD2 in, start the game and choose SoA)

 

Both of Larry the Luring suggestions should work. If you do a full install of both SoA and ToB, the only CD you'll ever need to put in your drive is the one for ToB, as everything else is on the hard drive.

 

When i start with CD 2, it demands the expanshion CD in D. When i switch to that, it continues only until i choose SoA, then demands CD 2 and the rest is histeria.
Full installs don't work for some reason. ToB's full install, for instance, falters when it reaches the file with the movies. I tried clicking "ignore", hoping it'll let me play, but without the movies, but then the game just collapses uppon chosing SoA, and all text is gone from the screen where you can choose.

 

Are your discs damaged or scratched?

 

Can you do a full install of SoA? Full install SoA and minimum install ToB should still result in you only needing the expansion CD.

 

From your description of full installs it looks like some of your CDs are damaged, which could explain the weird insert CD messages (I've had some very strange ones asking me to insert CD #0 while playing BG1). If the CDs are just dirty you might want to clean them up. If they're badly scratched, you're in trouble.

 

Full install of SoA fails too, though in a much less clear way. Whule the game itself is normal english, the instalation program is some horrible translation, so while i remember which buttons are the "next", "ok", "full" et c, i've no idea what it's telling me when it gives an error - it all comes out in screwed up unicode.

The discs don't seem BADLY scratched. They aren't perfectly smooth, since they've been used for many years, but other discs that seems as worn as these work just fine. I have two copees of the ToB discs {can't remember how it happened, as i only recently dug them out, and the last time was about 5 years ago}, and both of them fail on the same movie file, if i try a full install, though they react differently to the failure: one gives the retry/abort/ignore choice, while the other just asks for an ok and abborts. :=S

What the program fails to fidn when i attempt a full install of SoA is "D:/support/sounddata.res". Now, there is, indeed, a folder called "support" on the instalation CD, but the only fine there is an exe self-extractor, and noen of the files inside that exe are sounddata.res
So the program is set to look for a file that's not there? :=S

Okay, couple of things:

1. Do you have legal copies of the game? I'm not suggesting you stole them; but if you have gotten your copies from a friend who copied his BG2 discs for you, you may have gotten copied a damaged file.

2. Have you done a virus scan?

3. Are you starting a new SoA game, or continuing with one you already had going?

The very last thing I can suggest is to uninstall (if possible), reformat your harddrive and try to install again.

 

1. I got them from a freind indeed {atleast one of them, not sure where the other one is from}, as a present, but it was in a sealed package and all, with the original cover, et c. So i don't think it's an illegal copy, but i can't know for sure, since i wasn't the one doing the buying. However, if the problem was in a corrupted copy, wouldn't it also fail me back then, when i plaied it for the first time, years ago? It worked fine then...

2. Did now: nothing on the CD, nothing on the hard-drive

3. One that was already in progress. The reason i need to install ToB at this stage is because i now need a feature it adds. I explained it all at the SoA section, in a thread aptly named ";,={".

Formatting the hard drive is a very extreme measure and a pain in the ass, since it requires reinstalling everything i have going... but i suppose i'll consider it, as a last resort
