Polearms in Crouching Tiger

    [​IMG] So I was re-watching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for the umpteenth time, and I noticed the polearm that Bo is using in the fight with Jade Fox. It's a pretty standard blade-on-a-stick except that the blade has some sort of spiraling wire down the back side of it. If I remember correctly, so does one of the weapons that Michelle Yeoh's (rowr) character grabs in the fight at her headquarters with Zheng Zyi (double rowr).

    What's the purpose of those things? Are they historically accurate?

    Just asking in case I have to shred one with my newly-forged sword, Red-White-And-Blue Destiny. :1eye:

    [​IMG] Yep. They are. They're used mainly to disarm an opponent. But some of the stuff in the movies are also exaggerated. You need great skill to wield them anyway.:p

    I believe so. But it also can be in the form of a blade, flexed during forging into the spiral (or whatever shape) so that the opponent has two ends to contend with.

    Don't worry about it too much. You have the "destiny". :cool:

    Yep, I also have to definitely see this one again.

    If I remember correctly, the weapon used is bit of a boo-boo historically because the setting for Crouching Tiger seems to me in Sung Dynasty (10th to 13th century AD) but the weapon described was an innovation devised to defeat mounted warriors (the Mongols and similar nomadic invaders).

    The Sung Dynasty?

    I assumed based on the Manchurian hairstyles (the queue) of Li Mu Bai, Bo, Gov. Yu, Sir Te, etc. and the fact that they were in Beijing that it was during the Ching (Qing, if you prefer) Dynasty. That would put it in the 19th century, right?

    Granted, it's a fantasy flick, so we can't expect too much realism. After all, they didn't discover flying at Wudan Mountain until 1903. :1eye:
