This is my first poll so heregoes. do any of you ever use cursed weapons? most of them have there advantages but to me the drawbacks always seem to make using the weapon not worth it. please let me know your feelings on the matter. also if there is any specific cursed weapon you feel that you should make mention of please do so.

Sometimes I experiment with them, try them out for fun, but it's rare.

The only cursed weapon I ever used was Backbiter spear +3. I had a handy Remove Curse spell prepared to take it off.

I once did an "uber-cursed god" solo. I started in BG1 with a fighter and CLUAed in tomes to raise all stats to 25, then CLUAed in every cursed item in the game to put on him. I was particularly disappointed to find that a single Remove Curse took them all off, but I stayed disciplined and put everything back on except one each time. Even so, it got pretty boring (too easy) and I didn't even make it to Nashkel. :nolike:

Cursed weapons are really stupid, IMO - true, some of them are pretty damned useful, but the disadvantages just don't make it worth it. Besides, there are plenty of better weapons out there without those annoying drawbacks.

I think that's the point. It also gives you motive to ID items, because if you don't ID say... the cursed sword of berserking, then you would use itwhile it was blue and suffer greatly when you killed off your own party.

Of course everyone here memorizes everything in the game after the 30th time you've played it :p , but you know what I mean :) .

Most cursed items have a downside to wielding them, but I haven't found one where it's just the "unable to remove it" part being bad. Backbiter gives 3 points of piercing damage to the wielder for each successful hit.

EDIT: The Helm of Opposite Alignment just has the "inability to remove" as it's downside.

I think it's downside is that your alignment changes... I mean, you being 100% different in your actions/choices is a HUGE deal... just like the belt of masculinity/femininity!

Can you cast remove curse on an enemy you know is wielding a cursed item?

I just thought of that dude with the cursed sword of berserking, can you cast remove curse on him, making him unarmed?

Changing of alignment isn't that big of a deal. If your PC is the type to put on found objects, you probably aren't your alignment anyway. What I meant was it doesn't make you berserk (or whatever) *AND* is unremoveable.

You can remove it if the PC isn't wearing it: just kill the fool and collect the item.

Icky cursed weapons are, well, icky. Useless, I think. Sure, some have good upsides, but their downsides outweigh the good part of them.

    @Kuemper

I know what you were tryin' to say, but imho alignment change is equivalent to making you go berserk, if not worse for the average RP player. The reason I say this, is because if you're a LG Pally, you'd suddenyl become CE, you'd lose paladin abilities and if you had any good characters in your party, like Anomen or Keldorn, then you'd end up losing, ie: choosing Bodhi instead of the Shadow Thieves, because she gives you a better deal, (assuming you went to her before you returned to the other guy), etc. etc.

But yes, I guess if you don't care about your alignment and do things whatever way you want anyways, (in which case you should probably choose a nuetral alignment), then it won't make that big of a difference.

Actually, I think the only times I've used a cursed item is the Helm of Opposite Alignment. I felt like taking Viconia down to the Underdark to see if she had any reactions to the DeVirs in the domed cage (which, I don't think I saw any actually). Because I had a party made up of good people, I figured, why not? Trick her into being good.

I'm sure this could also work with Korgan, though a pity you can't use it on Edwin (just to see him turn into a girl around a good party. Wouldn't matter I supposed, but I'm sure it would still be funny XD).

:hmm: That's a good question. But the only one I would think it'd be useful against is Captain Brage back in BG1, and he can be talked down. Are you thinking of any encounter in particular that this might actually be useful in?
