I was using some mouthwash while my daughter was brushing her teeth in front of our small bathroom sink, so I spit the mouthwash into the toilet, and she asked me, "Dad, why do you spit in the toilet? I never spit in the toilet?" It got me to thinking that it was a great inane topic for a whatnot poll. Females probably never or rarely spit in the toilet, since they are normally sitting on it, while males often do, since they are often standing up in front of the toilet.

Yup, I spit in the toilet. Not when I'm sitting on it, but when the sink's occupied or it's closer to the potty than a trash can.

 

Why not? If you spit in the toilet, it gets flushed down, and the Sanitation Department is very thorough in screening toilet water for obvious reasons. The only problems I can see is if you spit on the toilet, or if you fall in (and spit is the least of your worries in that case).

 

Yup I spit in my toilet, almost as much as I do on my sink.

 

I have been known to spit in the toilet, but only when the toilet is closer when I have to spit. One of the joys of being out in the country is that you are free to spit almost anywhere. Same thing goes for taking a leak actually...

 

When I was younger, I did spit into the toilet but went in too close, so the toilet water actually splashed back out into my face. That's probably what stopped me from doing that again.

Which makes me the only person to vote no so far.

 

It all ends up going down the same drain pipes. So...Yes!

 

When I was pregnant I had a very unusual problem. I could not stop salivating and I felt so sick that I couldn't swallow my own saliva. Therefor I spit wherever I could including the toilet.

 

I can't think of any reason why I would ever want to spit at all, so may answer is 'no'.

Yes I spit in the toilet all the time (not sitting).

 

i only spit when i have fluid on my chest and it needs to be got rid of, so i would spit down the toilet at those times. i wouldn't spit in the sink though

Now as for being sick, if you have ever been pregnant then the toilet is your best friend for several weeks

Still not sure I understand the circumstances under which you would need to spit, pregnancy and vomiting aside.

Is this a cultural thing? I know that if you go to Asia, people are spitting all over the place, but I'm still not sure why.

 

@HB - I have overactive salivary glands, but I typically just ingest the excess DROOL. I can see other people needing to spit, tho.

And I can't say I never spit in the toilet, but I guess I'm lucky that in the few instances I do have to expel something from my mouth, a) I'm outside, b) there's a sink/dustbin(with a bag) handy. I wouldn't have any qualms about the toilet spitting since - as several people have noted - "it all ends up in the same pipes".

And with arthritic knees, I end up having to sit on the toilet, despite my maleness...just to throw a monkey wrench in you're predictions, Scot!

So Felinoid, are you only talking about spitting out mouthwash? I was getting the impression that nobody else had been referring to mouthwash ejection.

If you are only talking about mouthwash then I still wouldn't release it into the toilet because of the much greater chance of missing and making a mess. Why spit mouthwash all the way down to the toilet when the washbasin is higher and closer and an easier target?
