I think it should be pretty fun overall but I'm also somewhat afraid that this type of combat will make the game move much slower and not leave any room for any nice flashy combat animations which I had hoped for in a future AD&D crpg.

Oops I forgot to make something in between

It appears to be that most people seem to think that they will be pleased by the turn-based combat in this upcoming,... "legend"?(hopefully and apperantly very likely)

Honestly, as long as it's done well, I think it'll be fine. Some of my favorite RPGs were turn-based, such as Fallout, Arcanum, and Jagged Alliance 2. True, the faster pace of a BG or IWD is fun, but I think that the slower pace will hopefully allow battles to be more strategic as the player can devote more time to considering each move, spell, and attack. That said, one feature that would be nice, and I've not heard anything about this, would be some sort of all attack, or auto calculate option for when your full level 10 party gets ambushed by a Kobold Commando. :)

No doubt about it, turn based RPG's have slower combat. But they also are much more exciting in my opinion. How is slower more exciting? Well, I'm glad you asked.

For one...combat can becomes much more a thinking man's game. Turn-based combat allows spells and special effects to be much more complicated, enemy AI to be much more intelligent and these two factors combined lead to a much more strategic approach to combat.

Secondly...the slower pace, coupled with the increased difficulty leads to a much more unforgiving game. Which I like. Use a group with four fighters in BG2 and if you lose the battle after two minutes of fighting, just reload and maybe your rolls will go better next time. You'll know in a couple minutes anyhow.

But if that same battle took ten or fifteen minutes and requires extensive thinking...well you might just get a little more involved in the final result.

I love turn-based RPG's and I love when they make me really, really angry. It makes the pay-off all the sweeter.

Try Wizardy 8...you'll see what I mean.

It all depends on the implementation. Both styles have examples of both a very well-done job, and an abysmally crappy job. So I'll wait and see. The Final Fantasy fan in me loves turn-based, and the BG2 fan in me loves real time. So we'll see. As discussed in my "What if this games sucks" thread, I think the developers have seen the outcome of recent less-than-perfect games (PoR, Arcanum, Wizardry 8) and have taken notes.

I certainly hope itz da bomb-diggity.

[IMG] Was BG1 real time? Someone told me it wasn't but didn't actually say what it was.

If you haven't actually used Turn-Based before is it confusing?

Generally I'm a big fan of turn-based or semi real time (baldur's Gate), and since I haven't played POR I think it will be great.

I have waited for *long* to get something like this. UFO is a legendary example of how you can make a turn-based tactical combat game with a strong immersive feeling to it and (at least IMO) RPG elements. Even though the RPG elements in UFO was mainly up to the player's own imagination, and they could have enforced it more to make the game better, it was enough for me as it was to make it one of the best games ever. I am expecting ToEE to be something spectacular. It doesn't have to offer the complexity of BG2 let alone PS:T, as all it needs is a convincing plot, some good dialogue, and incredibly well done tactical D&D -style combat.

I'm not expecting a traditional RPG out of this one anyway.

I hope this game will redeem the turn based combat system that POR took for granted.

It's a good idea, and makes CRPG'S more like their P-N-P counterparts. I just want a new game!

I've finished all other games covered by S.P. and I want more.

    Excuse you ... huh?

Is my comment unclear, or do you just dislike turn-based combat?

    Now I'm confused.

I prefer quasi-real time, that still allows for strategy yet doesn't slow up the action. I think I might be able to live with turn based however.

I was so amazed by the fallout 1 demo I found, that I right away looked for the game. One of the features that impressed me the most was the turn-based combat-mode. I'm still praying for Fallout 3, especially if it features turn-based combat (and a chance that the plot takes place in Europa).

Not really. In some ways, I think it's easier to play than real time because your turn can't really be interrupted (helpful when casting spells).

With the infiinity games, the cool part was that you could pause the game, give your characters a series of commands, and watch the fun a roll. But with turn based, it's a little different. All your attacks for the round are all done at once, instead of spread out over the round, etc. Anyway, to answer: it may be a little strange at first, but not all that confusing. You pick it up in no time. When you think about it, most RPGs geared toward the younger crowd are all turn-based. So that should tell you something right there.

[IMG] Sounds a bit like the fight I'm running over e-mail to test my ruleset :spin: should be pretty cool then.

Hey I'm just wondering have any of you here ever played a REALLY OLD game called Return to Krodnor. It was turne based and I thought the slow combat wasn't too bad. I still say the combat animations were weak and pathetic though. What do you all think?

Fallout is brilliant. If it manages turn based battle as well as Fallout this game may very well be brilliant too.
