I thought the pacing was all ruined by all the extra scenes in the beginning. However the betrayal in the beginning and the Lothlorien scenes should have been in the theatrical release.

I thought the extending beginning was great. Pacing be damn! I just liked how it started with the main focus on Bilbo rather than Frodo. Afterall, The Hobbit was all Bilbo, and this is afterwards so I'm glad they showed the transition between characters. Plus the scene itself, Bilbo starts writting his book, "There and Back Again: A Hobbits Tale" (Tolkien giving the credit to his characters) and the whole Concerning Hobbits piece was nice to see.

All I can say about the previously disappointing Lothlorien scene is now it's what it should have been all a long. Much improvment and for that I am glad.

Overall theres no reason so see the shorter version ever again after getting a hold of this.

@Aikanaro don't fear. It's available for VHS as well. It doesn't have the commentary or extras but it's cheaper (about £12) and it does have the longer two towers trailer (i hadn't seen it before, grrr that trailer is annoying. I can't believe they changed the whole damm plot of what the two towers were grrr).

I've seen both versions and watched the extended yesterday. If you had previously read the books then the extended is better. The normal one is better as a faster paced film. I've read the books and i prefer the extended one.

It's absolutely great! The extra scenes in the first part makes the travel happen with a much more smooth flow, something I really missed. One has to remember it took them months to travel that far, so the extra scenes in different terrain really helps! :D

And in general, it's a lot of details that I think easily could have been in the theater version, can't understand why they were cut out.

Those scenes were probably removed because there were already complaints that the movie was too long.

    Yeah.

You know, back in the OLD days, there were these things called..

    INTERMISSIONS!

And the movie actually had a spot where the screen went blank and said Intermission on it. And movie directors took intermissions into account when they made the actual movie.

Anyways, I'm thinking about getting the extended version.

    What betrayal?

Love the extended version. I even held off on buying the movie when it was first released knowing that there'd be something like this. What's the point of buying a movie twice?
The original movie was fantastic but the extended was better!

    Perfection itsef.

Well, all save 1 part. Where Aragorn walks to the camp with that deer over his shoulder. Suddenly everyone's asleep and he starts to sing, frodo wakes up, asks a question and gets answered and then that's just it. Poof, and they're on the road again. The singing of Lúthien and Berem (I hope I got the names right) is good, of course. But the whole scene seems so... separately cut. As if it was a scene from another movie that didn't belong.

I love the extended movie. Not that much is added to any one scene, but there are little details here and there that flesh it out and tell a bit more of the story. I like that they had more names in it (Gollum's real name is mentioned by Gandalf, along with a hint of his past), and some of the scenes that seemed too brief (the Lothorien elves) were expanded a bit. I'm glad I bought the extended edition.

The bonus materials are pretty cool too. In the 2-disc version, they slapped in a bunch of short "featurettes", and some of them repeated themselves too much (the making of Hobbiton was in at least 5 of these). The Extended Edition bonus materials are much better organized. It's divided into different aspects like the weaponry, costumes, sets, etc, and you don't see anything repeated in different sections. I think there's a total of around 7 hours of bonus materials on this, and it's all cool.

Even if you have the theatrical version already, it's definitely a worthy purchase.

My boss (the wife) says that I have to wait until all three movies are released on DVD. She's sure that there will be a super-fantasic boxed set with all three movies. Why waste money now when I'll want the boxed set in a mere 3 years.

Its all about delayed gratification. Just to help her prove the point, I'm thinking she doesn't get any birthday, christmas, anniversery, etc presents for 3 years ... I'm just gonna buy a big thing then, why waste money on little gifts now?????????
