Well, after a conversation in FAi about fencing, i began to ponder how many SP'rs fence.

I personally have only been fencing for 5 months, but im getting quite good (according to folk who have been fencing for 10+ years) And i can actually beat guys who have fenced for 4-5 years. I fence Foil as my main and a good friend (97th in UK, i think, dont quote me on that) is teachin me Epee.

Ermm... no mate, I've never fenced.

I had no idea it was quite popular. I don't know anybody who fences.

 

Been fencing a couple of years, had to take a year out however because of my joints playing up. However my instructor has said he can teach people to fence in a wheelchair so I'd like to have a look into that

Yeh, its actually quite popular, and as bad as this sounds i reckon quite a few took it up cos of the bond move Die Another Day, but meh. Theres fencing clubs everywhere and its not to expensive to start if the club has beginners gear. Buying gear is another matter, £400-500 for everything depending on your wepon choice.

 

I don't fence, but I do practice other swordfighting. In our Hoi Jeon Moo Sool (a Korean martial arts) training they also teach about some weapons, including one- and two-handed sword.

 

I haven't fenced since high school (20+ years ago). I wouldn't have a great deal of time to do it now, but it'd be fun to give it another go...

Not much in my local area for instructors that I know of, but if any of my fellow American SP'ers know of one in the Milwaukee, WI or Chicago, IL area, please PM me.

 

I don't fence and I have never really felt any inclination to give it a try. I was going to post and say that no one fences where I live but a quick google search actually turned up a fencing league in my town - they even have a tournament that they are hosting listed on their site.

It is amazing sometimes to think of what goes on in your hometown that you are completely oblivious of.

 

You need an option for "I used to fence avidly but have since given it up."

I fenced for about 7 years, training 4-5 days per week and competing at the national level. In 1992, my team won the national title in Women's Epee. I still have the gold medal!

 

I fence sabre, and will do more if I ever get round to turning up to the uni's training.

Foil smells, and everyone knows it Sabre is a real man's weapon.

 

Bah, a claymore is a real man's weapon.

 

I'm akin to Rally, tho never came within LIGHT YEARS of her accomplishment level.

Fenced while in uni - when flunked outta uni, stopped fencing.

Liked sabre, myself; foil seemed to be a 'training weapon' and epee just HURT with no give in that heavy, triangular blade.

 

I never really liked fencing much. The barbwire had a tendency to catch my hand all the time and I was always crushing my thumb with the ham... OOPS wrong fencing.

Nope never tried it myself.

 

No one fences in India...

 

There are some fencing clubs in Vaasa, but I chose military combat instead, since you don't usually carry a sword around when the trouble comes. Fencing could be fun, but so are wrestling and boxing, which are part of military combat.

 

@Wordplay - agreed that fencing is more of a 'sport' like wrestling, rugby, etc. After all, you said yourself "there's several fencing clubs..."

And I'd be willing to say that regularly participating in any/all of these sports would aid in the ability to perform actions required in contemporary military service.

For instance, fencing would improve one's sturdy posture, enhance manual dexterity, etc. - having to strike your opponent's chest with only the tip of a metre-long 'pointer' whilst surpassing the opponent's defenses would lend to a better ability to marksmanship with that assault rifle you're issued...

Essentially, 'parry & riposte'

 

I'd like to fence, a great sport and great for conditioning. A very good friend has fenced for a few years and just raved about it. Moved through the weapons up to what I think was called a "Shlager"? A larger, broader sword.

 

Swords huh? I hoped this was a thread on the enjoyable art of putting up a fence.

Sword style fencing isn't my style. If you can get stabbed with a sword several times and continue to live, then you're doing it all wrong.

Yes, I love it and always wanted to do, and I am fencing for 2.5 months. I fence epee because it is the only option in my uni. But I think sabre is better because it is a little closer to using a real sword.

 

Fenced for 3 months at the uni. Had to drop it because I couldn't afford paying for it. Now that I have a job... I can't afford it either (darn mortgage)!

 

Oh, it is very cheap in my uni. $30 per semester. And they are giving the equipment, you don't need to buy anything.
