Which do you find more powerful?

The advantages of the Gnome Fighter/Illusionist are as follows:

    1)Better Saving Throws (vs. Magic)
    2)Racial Bonus to Intelligence
3)More spells per day (Specialist Mage)
4)More Hit Points (Elves get a Constitution penalty)

The advantages of the Elf Fighter/Mage are as follows:

1)Combat bonus to hit w/ Swords and Bows
2)90% Immune to Sleep & Charm spells
    3)Secret door detection
4)Better AC (Elves get +1 to Dexterity)

So, which would you choose, if powergaming your protagonist? Why?

Same as above. Besides, who would want to roleplay a grome? :p

This you would have to explain me, AFAIK dex 19 gives the same AC bonus as dex 18.

O yeah, for my choice, it's Elven, just cause he's a little better at melee (to hit bonus).

    The explanation is:

Not everybody has an 18 to start in Dex.. Sure, there isn't a difference (AC) between 18 and 19, but there is between 14 and 15, 15 and 16, 16 and 17, and 17 and 18. BTW, a 19 grants +1 to initiative over an 18 Dex.

OTOH, the gnome with his 19 Int. (assuming you can get it that high) can scribe an unlimited number of scrolls per spell level.

Elves are better fighters, but gnomes are better mages (losing necromancy isn't so big deal at all, especially if you have another mage in your party)

I'd choose gnome, because they are more rare protagonists than elves, and gnome avatars are funny in BG2. :D

Since you never use every spell in the game, you can just erase some spells. Then going Elf, you'll get Necromancy, which is - IMO - the best school in the game other than possibly Abjuration. With the Mad Machine-thing in Watcher's Keep, you can raise your Int to 19 anyway. This can be made in SoA, so you don't need to go through much or all of SoA as many think. Watcher's Keep CAN be beaten right away. Elf F/M any day.

i'd say the best school is evocation but necromancy is a VERY good one.

i voted for elf because we are not to judge about who is the better fighter or mage but who is the better MULTICLASS. and that is the elf.
i would miss spells like horror or spook that terrors enemies so you can shoot them with your bow.
if you prefer closecombat, the still buggy vampiretouch is GREAT.

i simply dont see a big advantage in one extraspell/lvl for a multiclass mage.

I said the elf, but truthfully it comes down to whether or not you're a fighter player or a wizard player. Because in the end playing the gnome will make it much easier for you to battle things out as a mage, the levels in fighter will just make it so you don't die too fast. But if you're melee, being an elf gives you the advantages of a possible 18 in strength, (gnomes lost 1 to max str I believe, being small and all), and you still have good spell power, including spells that can attack if you run out of fighter abilities.

Gnome FTR/ILLSNT protagonists can be very good if played well, but an elven fighter/mage would be a much better option as they don't lose out on necromancy which can be a big help (Spirit Armor!!!)

However, if the multiclass were changed to a Mage/Thief, Gnomes would be awesome because once they get Mislead, they would be wreaking HAVOC!
