Given that most of those who post in the Alley appear to be reasonably informed about world events (ignoring regional biases and the fact that xenophobes and/or snobs like the people in my neck of the woods tend to ignore the existence of the majority of the rest of the world), it occurred to me that we probably get our news in different ways.

For example, I swore off TV local news years ago. More recently, I swore off cable news after getting nauseous (and dizzy) switching from various fair and unbiased sources such as CNN and FoxNews (man, that left to right swinging can make you puke).

Of course, I can only stomach so much of my local paper. Thus, I find myself relying almost entirely on the internet (like the BBC site) and weekly periodicals (I love the Economist, balanced with Time and Business Week for a reasonably fair view of most news).

Please check only those boxes that you believe contribute a material amount to your news input (the occasional local news watching for celebrity "news" wouldn't count, and sports, as nice as they are, don't count as news in the majority of cases in my book).

Every time I try and read Time magazine I always find it to be a complete bore. It goes into far too much depth on some war-related issue and then when it has an interesting article it just glosses over the surface.

Current news I get from TV, daily newspapers, and the internet. In depth news coverage, I get from the big weekend paper.

I get it really in a jumble, I dont get any paper nor do I consistently watch the news on TV or actively read news on the net and still I seem to be reasonable in the loop. Those things however are my main sources but I just seem to pick things up without going out in search for them.

I get most of my news from overseas sources, as the media in the U.S. tends toward polarization and sensationalization. I generally read the webpages of Reuters, BBC, Al-Jazeera, MosNews/St. Petersburg Times, and my hometown paper The News Journal.

By hitting those sources on a daily basis, I get a good idea on what's going on in the world and a little hometown flavor from the News Journal. I also am a big fan of Space.com!

Sadly, the only news show I watch is "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart on the Comedy Channel. Mostly because the news is always so depressing, I feel I need to view it in satirical form.

Internet sites, daily newspapers and weekly magazines for me. Sometimes also local TV, but I don't typically watch it. Sometimes I'll watch the news if someone's already watching it and I happen to be there. Word of the mouth is a way of learning that a problem exists, but I don't take what people say as granted. I prefer to check it on the internet. And I have a good filter for evaluations, opinions, conclusions and the like. Being born in a commie regime, I don't buy bull**** easily.

When I need additional sources, I do a google search. Especially when I have to refer to a related history from a couple of decades ago or some such. Wikipedia happens to be helpful sometimes.

I will say that most of my information comes from internet sites like CNN or MSNBC, but I also watch my local 11:00 news almost every night. A concise 30-minute snapshot of what's going on is about all my attention span can handle when it's late.

I listen a lot to the radio, and there I get the latest news at least one time each hour. I also read both local and national news papers every day, and the news is pretty much the only thing I watch on TV.

I read the local paper from time to time to get a local view of issues and news that's important to me in my city. But for the most part I go online. I can get the same story from many different sources and compare them to each other to get a better view of the whole picture.

I get most of my news from the Economist but I sometimes watch EuroNews for updates and the most recent news.
BTW, has anyone here seen the no comment reports on EuroNews. I think it is a very novel idea to just show news with any commentators ranting in the background.

Radio's missing in the poll; though admittedly it's really so ubiquitous I didn't think of it either at first. But I probably hear most short clips of news there first in the morning in the bathroom, then again while I drive to the uni.

So, for me, radio first, then daily newspaper for details, then Internet news sources, and TV once every few weeks.

DMC - Mostly three channels of C-SPAN, including Washington Journal and Book TV: http://www.c-span.org/
    http://www.booktv.org/

I also watch "Meet the Press" and "Face the Nation." Both are pretty light-weight, but there are some occasional "tense" moments.

And I use internet sites such as CCN and MSNBC, but the cable news channels themselves are terrible. I receive no newspapers and no radio.

I do not actively follow any news, but you cannot help but hear bits from here and there -forums, sites with news in their front-page, whatever drifts from the TV when I turn it on (-rarely-), and some free news-papers with cat-sized letters.

It's actually harder to stay ignorant than informed.

Well, these days it's mostly radio and local newspaper through the week, with a national newspaper on a Sunday, I get regular e-mail updates from a national newspaper twice a day, watch a bit of local/national news weeknights and actually, I get a lot of international news from these very boards.

Oh, and anything at all to do with Family Law or the Men's Movement in Australia, I get from the weekly DIDs meetings.

NPR, baby. All the way. The local affiliate also broadcasts BBC's world service program so I get a different perspective as well.

Well, NPR mixed with the free Metro newspaper that's distributed at the train station, and is really nothing more than an AP headline service. :o

Aside from the weather forecast, I just don't have time to watch the local news at home - explaining all that crap to a 4-year-old is hard work. Let him be a child as long as possible.

Hey, there's another source you forgot, dmc. Ragusa! :D

Radio newsflashes which can be pretty up to date because they air them every hour on the day. Morning local newspaper althought that's mostly for sports. Furthermore www.nu.nl, it's a dutch news site with up to date news all over the world.

I'm not a big news junkie though in the way that I have to know everything everywhere. In fact I try to stay away from most war/car bombing/explosives/ eliminations/ civil wars/ people getting beheaded/ childish presidency games/ school shootings etc etc etc. I know many people who have opinions in every subject there is to talk about and for me it's impossible to judge any news subjects when it has not happened close to me. Therefor I read it but don't discuss it or opinionize it.

The BBC's news 24 service is pretty good, though since I've got cable TV I can watch other news channels too now ;) .
Newspapers and internet sites also keep me up to date on whats going on, and if there's something I've missed you can bet it gets posted here so I can check it out :)

I can't stand to watch the talking heads on local news, and haven't for years; it is simply nauseating with the jokes and hamming it up for the camera.

I get the LA Times daily and the Economist weekly; I read Discover and Scientific American monthly. I'll browse internet sources at work. Infrequently, I'll watch cable news networks.

I am a very skeptical reader; I have seen too many articles in the Times about things I was involved with that were just way off of what the real facts were, but maybe it's because reporters aren't scientists, and really have no clue what they're talking about in certain circumstances.
