Just curious about how many of us speak more than one language (I'd include sign language as long as you can be understood by a deaf person)

Not so Fluently and in some cases just a some common phrases about 6.
And I would love to vote but my computer doesn't like the polls here and has a tendency to stuff up.

    Fluently - 1, English.
I can speak some German, as well as a bit of Quenya. I know some random phrases in some other languages, but that's about it.

I voted three even if two and a half is more correct. I speak English and Swedish fluently and I can make myself understood in German if everyone takes gives me some time and take it slowly.

For me? Two. Finnish and English. I DO know a little bit of Swedish, but not enough to be considered fluent.

Of course, ny life's goal is to be as fluent as my father. He speaks eight languages :/

I wonder, if I learn Elvish does that count? :p

Fluent English comes from using it daily in work, and having it as a hobby in various forms. I'm not perfect, but I'm better than most of the good non-native English speakers I know of.

My father's mothertongue is Swedish, and I've lived in a Swedish speaking town for well over 10 years. Which means that although I forget words and don't have full skill with written grammar, few can notice that Swedish isn't my mothertongue in a casual brief conversation.

And then there's Finnish, my actual mothertongue.

Other than these three, I've fiddled with German and Japanese, but fiddling is what you might call an overstatement. I recognize some words here and there, but that's it.

[IMG] Inspired by Arabwels reference to learning Elvish (and I suppose that Quenya is more popular to Sindarin), is anyone here aware of the situation in the US where it was proposed to drop Tolkien Elvish as a studied language in favour of Klingon?

I would be interested to hear which one won out.
So torn- but my favour definately lies with the elves.

Edit: HA! sorry, this is soooo :yot:

[I just changed the word Eldarin to Sindarin, my mistake ;) ]

(In reply Arabwel's post below; Agreed! :D )

Actually, I'd like to learn Sindarin rathe than Quenya, but either one would be cool :D

Elvish-speaking geeks are higher in the food chain than Klingon-speaking :p

Lemme see: Danish is my native, I speak english fluidly, although I have some accent and I just might manage to make myself understood in German. Beside that, living in Scandinavia gives me some understanding of Swedish and Norwegian. This might be against what I've stated in another topic and truth be told, it takes a lot of concentration to have a conversation with some my northern neighbours.

[IMG] English is primary, but I can read/speak/write in French and Russian - but Russian is by far my better second language. I also know enough Italian and Spanish to find my way and get a few slaps! ;)

[IMG] In that case...I know "many" languages!!! ;) :spin:

I have to say though...I'm always impressed at how multilinguistic the folks here at SP are. Most Americans can barely speak english, let alone grasp another language.

This may be slightly off topic; Where do you go to actually study Klingon? And what do you do with the knowledge when you're done?

I speak Norwegian, English, and German, though my German is a bit rusty. I also had to force myself to learn how to read Hiragana some time ago.
