I really want to be romantic but it just dont seem to happen. I have a mind which has already branded most things who are seen as romantic as silly or unnescessary. I mean red roses, a bunch of them costs 40-50 bucks, easy, no dead plant can be worth that. You cant even eat most of it!

That's why women love them so much. They know that you think they are silly and will die anyway. So they know that it was tough for you to go out and buy them. So it means more to them.

    Well, that's my experience anyway.

Or it's a simple display of your wealth showing you'll purchase something that has few uses that will eventually be non-existant despite how expensive it is.

I've always found the measure of romance to be in the eye of the reciever. Some actions can be viewed as very romantic by one person but pointless or unnescessary to another.

Besides, a person can't be more 'romantic' than another, only their actions can be. Opportunity is the primary ingredient for being romantic. If you aren't presented with an opportunity to be romantic you _can't_ be romantic.

Romance can become 'annoying' very quickly if someone tries to be romantic too often. Effect is far more important than frequency. Effect can only be aquired with opportunity.

I gave myself a five and was probably too generous. I can start off as a charmer, but once real conversation and stuff comes into it, I am in over my head.

    Poster child for romance ineptitude.

    [IMG] Valentines day. Aargh.

Only 'cattle' and 'livestock' send cards for 14th February. I rather send or receive a card on, let's say, March 22nd, October 10th or any other day that would surprise someone to find a card in her mailbox.

If (rather: When :) ) I get a girl, she should be glad for getting nothing for Valentines-day and realize she's something special.

Lol Joacqin. Does she eat postcards and pearl necklaces? I wonder what she would do when you invite her for dinner...

    EXCUSES, EXCUSES, say I!

Part of being romantic is finding those opportunites, or creating them. And as far as effect goes, a number of spontaneous small gestures can have even greater effect than a single instance of something dramatic.

MoN, I cant understand that either! Jewelry is just horrendously expensive pieces of metal and stone. What is the deal with it? Dont even get me started on postcards, it is paper for gods sake! If I would try to be romantic I would do something useful like cooking dinner and serve it in a nice way or take her to some special place somewhere with a great view. The thing is, even the pretty sensible things have a hard time crossing my mind, thus I gave myself a four.

    Wrong. You can make opportunities.
    Wrong again.
    And wrong again. Very wrong.

I am certain all of the above are wrong because my wife has told me so. Many times. Personally, I wouldn't know. :xx:

I notice that 'zero' wasn’t a choice in the poll.

[IMG] My wife confessed to our pastor that I'm too romantic for her. She gets tired of the cuddles, presents, flowers, breakfasts in beds, ect. She's just not wired that way.

(for example, this Christmas I surprised her with a range of presents from jewlry to little cute things to her from the baby ... she got me empty picture frames)

    So I don't know if I'm a 10 ... but I sure try to be!

That's a good point Mat. I mean, effort should count, right? I always try for a 10 myself, but I figure I probably come up short of that at times, so I settled on 8. Actually what we should be doing is asking our significant others how romantic we are, instead of evaluating it ourselves. As has been stated, it's really what the other person makes of your gesture that determines if it's romantic or not - it's not necessarily what you feel about it.

Plus, there's no getting around it. For all the men in the world, remember this simple fact:

Sure, it's possible to not get your girlfriend/wife anything for Valentine's Day. But if you don't get her something she wants, you probably won't get what you want...

I'm very romantic, but part of romance is it being special and standing out from the norm. You can overdo it. There will eventually come a point, as apparantly Mat has demonstrated, that she'll get sick of all the attention. You have to play hard to get just a little bit. Make her want and appreciate the sentiment.

All women want romance, but I can't think of a single woman who, if you showered her with roses and candy and kisses EVERY SINGLE DAY, wouldn't eventually think of you as a mushy douchebag and lose all respect for you.

Shura, magnificent poem :shake:

According to Rally's definition I should probably give myself a big round ten for I'm the master of "spontaneous" gesture and "accidental" opportunities

I'm also the enlightened ruler of meaningless babble. I can talk or write about nothing for whole hours. Guess it's a big boost.

My romantism score gets even higher when I'm drunk. For example, dancing slow tango with my classmate, barefoot - I had had a litre and she a half. Not a single trip ;) My French mysteriously becomes error free when I get drunk enough. Must be evolution or something.

What's more, I'm a mean bastard, which is very romantic. And I write morbid poems when I'm bored, which is even more romantic

And I study law. Now this is romantic :shake:

Which is the whole point of Valentine's Day, anyway :D .

I could easily be a 10 in that poll if my girl wanted that. She's not really into the whole 'charming, romancing' guy thing, which I can respect.

    LOL @ Shura's link
It reminds me of a poem I wrote my wife many years ago when I sent her flowers after she kept bugging me to do so. (This is further confirmation of my non-romantic status):

    Roses are red
    And white, but not black
    Here are your flowers
    Now get off my back

(Note: it's not even accurate, since apparently there are black roses).
