POLL: Minnie poll: Stalker vs. Archer

AS many of you may have seen, I've started a thread about my new character concept: Minnie the Minimalist Ranger. I've decided to download and install EasyTutu, so I need to pick a kit to start off the game with. I am looking for the more powerful of the two kits, keeping in mind that Minnie has the lowest starting stats possible (13/13/14/8/14/8). I will be adding any possible stat bonuses on to her.

So, which path should Minnie take?

Archery will be better suited as she will be away from the harm's way most of the time, IMHO.

 

Well, I'm a huge Stalker fan-boy, but for Minnie the best option may be to hang back to avoid trouble; Stalkers often end up surrounded, which isn't good for someone with only 13 DEX and no CON bonus! Having a dedicated archer isn't exactly a bad idea in BG1, either.

 

Archer for me Klorox, there be plenty of weapons of choice later on

 

I have to go with Archer also; IMO it will make your live easier in the beginning of tutu.

 

Stalker. She can still shoot arrows, but BG2 is biased toward melee. With Gauntlets of Dexterity, Girdle of Fortitude and Mauler's Arm/Crom Faeyr, Minnie will perform just fine. Early on, liberal use of potions will do the job (Fortitude, Strength, Giant Strength, Heroism, Invulnerability to name a few).

Even without the girdle she will have at least as many hit points as any thief doing backstabs. As long as you keep this limitation in mind she should be great.

 

Archer is leading by a wide margin.

 

In terms of sheer power, stalkers are pretty crappy. The reduced-power backstabs aren't worth it, nor is the leather restriction.

You can make a half-hearted argument for the vanilla ranger in plate mail and melee, but like I said in the other thread, the archer is hands-down the most powerful ranger kit in BG2/TOB (and is even one of the easier solo characters)

Remember that although you'll most likely 5* longbow or shortbow, your increased missile weapon THACO will carry over to other missile weapons in which you have fewer than 5* (such as Everard's Sling, which you can use just fine against liches and other critters with protection from magic weapons/mantle).
