    Where's Falun Gong on that?

Not that I know or have good reason to believe it's the most persecuted one.

Are we talking about today, or over the whole of its existence? Because that could change the answer considerably.

Historically, I'd have to say Judaism. Recently, I'd lean more towards Islam.

If media and mass culture are concerned, Christianity by far. No particular denomination here.

If actual physical harassment and extermination is concerned, I would say just about any religion in a hardcore communist regime like China.

Depends on where and when. As eurocentric, I'd say judaism.

If you are talking about an historical analysis, and you are defining persecution along its dictionary lines, there is no doubt that it is Judaism simply due to the age of the religion, the fact that it has always been a minority (with certain very limited exceptions) and Jews have been chased all over the globe: Come to Egypt be welcome -- oops, now you're slaves; come to Spain and be welcome -- well, now we've got this Inquisition; come to eastern Europe and be welcome -- er, Naziism anyone? . . . you get the picture. It's actually pretty standard practice that the first group that gets picked on is the Jews -- sort of a canary in the coal mine. You know things are going to start going badly when the Jews start getting picked on.

    Factual Post:
Falun Gong is less of a religion than a form of psuedo-mystical qigong, or the manipulation of ki.

It is based mostly in China, practiced mostly there too. It is spreading to other countries though.

Falun Gong has been declared an illegal religion in China and many of their cultists have been arrested/executed, etc.

[IMG] Scientology a religion? They are a business enterprise exploiting their members for profit, driving them into dependency for continuous profit. They IMO want religion status for tax reduction only.

But americans may see it more liberal ...

As for prosecuted religion, it could well be christianism, considering the crackdown in communist times and what's still happening in parts of asia.

In terms of KIA probably judaism, but then you have to exclude terrorism in the middle east as this is, first of all, a plotical dispute between israeli and arab nationalists.

And one class overlooked: Animistic tribal religions in africa and asia fell prey to muslim and christian missionaries.

Actually Nazism was of Western Europe. Concentration camps were located partially in Eastern Europe but by Nazi occupants who took over Eastern European countries in WWII.

Actually Beijing, as a still atheist gvt, more or less tolerates most religions that do not challenge the gvt's demand for supremacy by the china gvt.

That's actually Falun Gong's problem - they actually do exactly that. The same applies to islam in west-china. The cristians in china also are viewed with suspicion as they are under influence of a foreign gvt, yes, the vatican. Buddhism is irrevocably linked with tibet and the chinese occupation - and demands for chinese withdrawal from Tibet - unacceptable for Beijing.
Taoism does not challenge this demand for power.

The chinese emphasis on a strong gvt and the constant fighting of, rationally or irrationally, perceived challenges to the supreme position of power are a result of the mindset formed by historical events.

The chinese gvt has very sound reasons to discriminate this religions or movements: Beyond beeing commie or not, a strong rule, centralised gvt and authoritarian rule have a strong tradition in china, and an ancient one. Just have a look at the splendid movie "Hero". Democracy as we understand it might doom china - a strong rule may the only thing that may hold china together, and a little oppression might be a good price compared to the suffering in chaos and strife.

Most countries are influenced by their histroical debacles, china is no exception: The western powers were able to humiliate china's weak gvt's in the opium war and the boxer uprising. This has not been forgotten. Much less forgotten is china's situation in the 1930s, when warlords ruled the country - that eventually enabled Japan to pounce upon china who's inefficient and corrupt gvt was no match for them.

China is, despite what dyed in the wool commie-eaters say to justify increased defence spendings, not really a hardcore commie country anymore. It's changing, slowly, but still changing. But they have learned their lesson: That a strong rule and a strong country is esssential for china's welfare - the past two centuries have shown that.

I'm not sure if I prefer a china ruled by a strong commie gvt or a weak democratic one, probably suspect to explosive population growth, social problems and eventually political instability ... really, a little communism in china isn't the worst thing.

Historically Judaism is the most procecuted religion not for the religion itself so much as for the people and the whole closed society ideology that has been embedded in the religion by the Jews way back before the rise of Roman empire. But for the modern times i believe that Islam is the winner with a huge difference from the second

I do. I've actually done some research into it mainly out of curiosity. Like Hinduism, I didn't really understand the belief system of Scientology. With both, I was very pleasantly surprised.

Scientology is more closely related to the Eastern Religions of Buddism and Hinduism. The concept of "god" in Scientology is very much the same of Buddism - beyond human understanding. So you don't see the fire and brimstone stories of angering the god.

It is a very aggressive religion - using all sorts of techiques to convert new members. This gets them into alot of trouble.

Can I add a question? Why?

Why do you consider these religions the most persecuted? Why do you consider Islam the most persecuted of all religions in modern time far away more so than the second? And also, what is 'modern times?' I mean, historically 50 or 60 years ago wasn't too long ago but I take it that isn't 'modern times?'

In a Chinese context FalunGong is persecuted the same way that the students were persecuted in 1989 in Tiananmen, they asked for political change and that is a no-no.

Also in 1989 there were larger protests all over China by muslims and they were not crushed, because they were not asking for political change, just the redress of what they felt to be an insult.

Perhaps the reason that muslims in western china (Turkestan = Xinjiang) are being persecuted is because they ask the unaskable? The muslims in neighbouring provinces Qinghai and Gansu are not persecuted because they don't demand independence.

The Uighur sepratists don't represent the majority of muslim views and they are not persecuted "because they are muslims".

The Chinese Constitution actually recognises Islam as a valid religion, so I can't see how the Chinese government can be said to persecute peoples because of their religion.

The Chinese government does not persecute Tibetans because they are Buddhists or "other", just that they demand the ultimate blasphemy, independence.

The Chinese government is hardly communist, it wasn't really when I was there in 1990, and it most certainly is not now...

Thanks to American propaganda in the last year or so (and especially in the last 2 years), I think it is safe to assume that Islam is the most persecuted religion.

I think it sad that you don't understand what persecution is. I know that some here have an all too familiar understanding of what persecution means and maybe they'll share. BTW, there is a difference between persecution because of political reasons of someone who happens to be of a certain religion and persecution BECAUSE of religion.

Well, to scientology have the following to say. They can not come and demand to be treated better then presbyterians, catholics and muslims. If they don't like, they can go somewhere else. I wouldn't say that's persecution, even they obviously tend to scream that whenever they can. But for me, they primarly a bunch of confused jerks who give out leaflets with ads for their "Purification Rundown®". Good verus cancer and radioactiv-radiance. Yeah, right. Too bad, they need a market-licencer for that, like anyone else.

Be able to think clearly !
