Ok, I would like to know what movies you like the best when it comes to it's rating. Also, I want to know if you have ever seen a movie the you were too young to see in the theaters...i.e. seeing a rated "R" move when you're 15.

Personally, I think rated "R" movies are the best. They can show enough skin to be sexy and enough gore to show how setting of the movie really was. :rolling:

A movie can be a "grown-up" movie without being "R"-rated. Conversely, I won't refuse to see a film just because it is "R" rated -- if the storyline sucks, or the sex and violence is just gratuitous, sure, I'll avoid it, but some of the best movies ever made have violence in them. And to religious whackjobs, I just say that a movie made about the whole Bible would be "R" rated for sure!

It really depends on the movie. Sometimes I prefer a Toy Story to a Clerks, or a Lord of the Rings to a Dawn of the Dead, etc . If the content calls for the rating because the brutality or whatever is central to the story, then I prefer a good NC-17. But an action or drama having sex and gore just for shock value doesn't make a movie "edgy," it makes it stupid and low-brow.

If anything, I have a least favorite rating, which is PG-13. Decent movies in this category are very rare.

I think the whole rating system is stupid. I mean, they should have a rating system to tell you what's in the movie, but the parent should have power on what they allow their children to watch. If they don't want their kid watching nudity or violence then it should be up to them.

I remember I wanted to go watch The Patriot when it came out and I was only 15 or 16. I had my mom come with me to theatre and tell them it was ok for me to watch it but they still wouldn't let me in!
Since they wouldn't sell me a ticket I just snuck in instead.

The rating system sucks. I don't actually have any experience of it as such, seeing as here in Finland we have a bit different system, but I have dealt with these ratings as well.
A rating does not tell what exactly the movie entails... in my opinion, some kind of ranking system that states how much gore/sex/whatever a movie entails in a scale of, dunno, one to five? Could work better. Or something.

And yeah, I have gobne seen movies before I was supposed to go see them. :D If I can walk past a bouncer to a bar without a blink, seeing a movie is dead easy :D

We here in Australia have a different rating system than you. We have:
    G
    PG
    M
    MA15+
    R18+
As a guess, i would suppose the majority of PG13 go into M, and R 17+ into MA. MA movies generally consist of things like teen movies. M are just the vanilla standard range, PG kid movies that say 'butt' and G is the little mermaid. R is the hardcore deep theme type of movies, like pulp fiction and porn.

My favourite is MA, as it has the most variety in decent movies.

IMHO America's system of rating realy sucks.
Personaly I'm all for M and MA movies. Though sometimes Disney just rules supreme :)
The only R arted (by Australian ratings) movie I've seen is The Fly, which wasn't all that good anyway.

We got a different rating system. The human body (a.k.a. nudity) is not inherently bad. But senseless brutality and needless violence is. Imho, there's no connection between the rating and the quality of a movie.

Yes, I used to see movies, for which according to the rating I would have been too young on a regular basis in theatres. Outside of the city, no one gives a dam about those ratings, except for "18" rated movies. That would be a either a lot of violence or porn.

It's quite staggering how differently sex/nudity and violence affect ratings in different countries.

Comparing Norway to the UK, violence which in Norway would either rate a film straight 18 or be cut for the worst scenes can easily pass for a 15 in the UK, sometimes even a 12!

Put in a bit of nudity, particularly male nudity seems to be a complete no-no in the UK, and it seems to automatically get an 18 whereas in Norway nudity will not really push the rating. Sex acts of course are a different matter which will generally get 18's accross the board.

I always did find it interesting that you have to be 16 (both Norway and UK) to do it, but 18 to watch it? What's that all about?

Now that I'm old enough, but don't have kids, I don't look or care about the rating. It's a movie.

Ratings are more like a guidance here. Alot of violence and gore tends to give a movie a high rating. Here in Sweden we have 7, 12 and 15. The numbers are the age and you can go to a 12 rated movie if you are over 7 and bring an adult ie someone over 15. If you are 15 you can see anything. Sex and nudity rarely pushes the limit unless it is really explicit. There are other standards though, like for the movie AI it got a 12 rating due to the fact that there was this scene when the robot kid was left in the forest by his mother. That was deemed to be too stressful for young children to watch.

I've watched a smattering of European films. French dramas, German Pornos, and Britt sitcoms and otherwise.

Nudity and sex are second nature in European movies. You can have a naked man and woman, and the movie *might* get a PG rating if there's a lot of cussing and vulgar gestures in there, too. Disney would be like, -G on the European scale. No one over 5 admitted without a toddler.

However, throw in some Pulp Fiction and Natural Born Killers scenes, and now it's either NC-17 or whatever in the world is higher; XXX, I guess.

And some german porn (and italian) that I've seen is called "deviant" and "purulent" by US Federal Law. That is, BANNED.

All this goes back to Puritans, you guys (and girls). Europe flushed them all over this way. Like it or not, it's been a factor and it's going to continue to be a factor. Puritanism was going strong in 1783, and since many of our governmental documents date to that period, it's still completely integrated into our society.

I think this is one societal change that would be good. Emulating the Europeans.

I'm not saying every film has to have sex and nudity. I'm not saying ban all violence. I'm saying teach your society to deal with it, whatever may come up.

The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in kombat.
