I like both BG and IWD style. Joinable NPCs would increase number of dialogues, and they could have very interesting personalities. :p But NPCs aren't *your* characters. That's why I also like to make all characters myself.

I have to say keep it the way it is. I hate in BG when you find an NPC and have to debate whether to ditch one member of your party for the new one. Plus, they are never exactly what you want.
I like to be able to make the lot. Although, i don't like in IWD if you make a new character later on, they start at level 1, whereas in BG, they join you at a level comparable to your current level.

Being able to customize your whole party is a great thing. Sure, sometimes you're gonna want the additional conversation and character development NPCs give you. When you do, go play BG. :)

One thing so cool about IWD is that it ISN'T just another BG. It's an entirely different game, and those differences make for two separate kinds of gaming experiences.

No, if we wanted NPC we'd play Baldur's Gate or Torment. Making your own chars makes this game unique (aside from the kickass battles of course)

I've got to agree, although I find that I prefer the NPCs ala BG series, mostly for the personalities, but also for the fact that they aren't always exactly what you'd want and you have to really make some serious choices about party construction. That said, I also enjoy creating my own characters, thinking of names, backgrounds, etc. But fundamentally, they are two differant styles and I enjoy them both.

IMO, I'd go with IWD's original style. I prefer to create my own party. Sure there's no side quests or banter, but at least you know you're getting 6 (or whatever) quality characters. You make them unique and interesting by their backgrounds and appearances.

One thing that annoyed me about BG was that I wanted Jahiera in the party, but not Khalid, the pantywaiste fighter who failed his morale check every other battle and ran off. They were a package deal, so if you wanted to get rid of him you had to send him off alone to get killed. No fun.

You don't have to focus on keeping them all happy either. You can have an chaotic evil cleric with a paladin and nobody whines - no infighting. Doesn't really make sense to do that, but at least you have that option. Your party is only as strong as its weakest members - so having Viconia with her pitifully low strength and con overshadowed her cleric abilities.

I prefer IWD because win or lose, it's YOUR party. They survive based on how you made them, and by extension how you play them.

Joinable NPC's would have defeated the purpose.

The whole idea was you make a PnP party. And stick with them, through thick (skulls) and thin (strikes), until the endgame.

hmmm well maybe if they had a coupld of joinable NPC's. Then it could be your choice if you wanted them to join or not, or maybe have a joinable NPC sibling travel with you. I'd enjoy that.
