In my d&d campaign that I dm, the basic plot revolves around the destruction/closing of the current world and the beginning/opening of another. Of the following redundant ideas I keep trying to coming up with, which sounds the best (any additional ideas, vote other and your post idea below)?

You didn't leave an option to vote for "Other", but here goes....

The very fabric of the plane is unraveling for some unknown reason. The gods themselves are at a loss. A portal to another plane must be created for anyone to escape, but magic has become unreliable. Chaos is rampant as people everywhere are beginning to notice the dissolution of their world. In some cases, mortal enemies are cooperating to find an escape, in others, fast friends are clawing at each other in the hopes of gaining an advantage to finding a way out.

I don't think that the cause is important. The story is in what happens when the knowledge of impending doom becomes widespread and what the "heroes" do about the problem.

I once made a plot where the group was to stop a lich from making the planes contract and collapse into eachother centered on the material plane by using an ancient machine.

as it progressed you would see more and more elements of the different planes on the material plane. Demons and angels walking amongst the living, fiery chasms of hell next to a celestial mountain. Part of the limbo in the great sea, causing havoc while the mountains turn cube like. Stuff like that.

The birth of a new world is interesting, but even more so is if the pc's should be able to survive it, and want to?

The campaign setting that they will be entering is planescape, specifically the city of Sigil. The players themselves know that a planescape adventure is brewing but they do not know when exactly. The characters themselves probably WOULD let the world end as a heartless DM took the whole lot of their friends and families right underneath their nose (muhahaha). So before I go and attempt the to destroy the very world which I have created, over the next few sessions I will need to create a purpose for living other than leveling up. :) Special thanks to Lokken and Big Stick for helping me see a vitally important detail. I have a few ideas now. Please keep posting!

Lokken: I know exactly what I could use for ancient machine. I'm wondering if a what creature would most likely be able to activate it? It was constructed by the gods with the assistance of the ancient red dragons (most dragons are now extinct in my world) on the highest peak on the island called "The Lantern" (pretty much a continual flame that's basically the island's lighthouse/night light).

the purpose could be to avoid to deny destiny. Sorta like touch some vital instincts of socialism in man that makes them care for each other and other people, create a noah's ark in form of a pocket plane (or pocket dimension) to bring as many living creatures as they can convince from the destruction.

if they most likely would destroy the world, they might want to fight for the right to do so? as frank herbert wrote in dune "he who can destroy a thing, controls the thing"
Else there's always vengeance, which can be a powerful motivator (I use this frequently for pc's and npc's alike).

I've created a custom world for the sole purpose of ending in a big bang, creating this real world from it's remnants (in its story).
Still debating whether or not I like to be so destructive.
