The question I pose to you is this. When you journey through around the Sword Coast, how much do you obey the law?

Bizarre little poll. Two choices for yes but only one for no? Anyway I don't think stealing is important to my gaming, but I don't think it's cheating either. It just doesn't suit my party structure.

I agree with Spelladonna. I generaly don't steal as it does not fit my style of play but I do not consider it cheating.

If you were to steal, sell, re-steal, sell again etc. with the same merchant I would consider this to be exploiting the limitations of the program and thus would label it cheating but I certainly have no problems with stealing from a merchant and then taking his stuff to a fence to sell.

You know, there are times I wonder why they don't have those thief stronghold quests that requires qone to do an act of thievery?

Why are you a thief if you refuse to take the plunge into the unlawful?

Stealing is usually the only way I get my items from shops. Not counting the Adventurer's Mart of course.

Well, I dont really think it´s cheating. But I usually dont steal because I dont have any thieves that are good enough.

I voted to the third (that it is cheat) because there was no other choice. The real reason I do not steal is that I do not care about it (it is just too complicated), I can get the items I want and/or like in other ways.

If I play a Theif I usally spend some points in Pick-pocketing, and if I play a Bard...well you get it for free.

If I don't play thief myself, then Jansen is my thief. Since he got quite good stats in traps/lockpicking and got spells for getting invisible, I put points in Detect illusion and pickpocketing.

Stealing, selling, stealing back, selling again though, that's cheating imo - why don't you just give yourself money with SK and save some effort? :bang:

Well, I certainly don't think it can be considered a "cheat". I mean, there is a button on the trade screen to attempt to steal, so I can hardly believe that the programmers intended that you shouldn't steal. Depending on your PC's alignment, there may be some moral issues with stealing, but I certainly don't consider it cheating - it is an intended part of the game.

Maybe he meant that it is cheat in the world of the game so not honest, thus you are not using it :D

I steal pretty much anything I can get away with, though I often get bored just stealing from merchants. But providing it doesn't ruin any quests, I'm happy to steal anything from anyone.

I don't bother with stealing because I don't think it is worth the trouble to memorize the good steals.

The only time I always steal is Algernon's cloak in BG1, for help buying the more expensive stuff that the smith sells earlier.

As for shop stealing, I have never even attempted it once. I just don't feel right unless I'm paying for my items with gold. I have yet to play an evil party, so I am not sure if I will end up doing it when I finally do.

I voted "yes, with any", but actually I don't steal if the PC is lawful. And if the PC is good, I only steal from fences.

I only steal if my PC is a rouge or I have Jan.
With a few potions of master thievery down my throat every merchant in Amn is terrified of me ;)
Only Bernard, Ribald and my stronghold fence remain safe from me. I mean which other merchants do you visit more than once anyway?

You really should have added an option like "If I am role-playing."

Well, I voted yes, with any party because of lack of the option that answered the question correctly, which would have been:

No, it's not important though I do some thieving.

Sometimes I steal but that doesn't make me think about it as important. If I couldn't steal, well that would still be the same for me.

I answered yes. Short of the fact that my favorite class is the Bard class, stealing is one of the best options you can have in the game.

The Bard class is also specially geared for stealing... high int, high wis and high char, and after a few potions of master thievery and in the case of this class at least, you won't find a logical explanation for not stealing.

Using SK to give yourself gold or items you could have stolen defeats the purpose of not cheating. Stealing can be cheesy, but it will never be called a cheat, in the same way that reloading again and again to win a battle isn't considered cheating.

Sell-stealing is exclusive for rogues with high stats in pickpockets or high ability scores. (int, wis or char). In the case of the former, it must mean he has godly pickpocket stats so the merchant didn't even know he had lost the item. Athkatla also happens to be the thieving capital ("city of coin" implies...), so no problem there.
In the case of the latter, many "excuses" can be made.
Sell-stealing won't benefit characters who fail to meet the requirements.

[IMG] I voted 'yes always' because there's no reason not to (other than moral reason). Maybe it would be better if, everytime you succeeded at stealing something, you lost some reputation (maybe 2 pts).

I'd prefer to have it whereby the more often you stole from the safe merchant, the less likely you were to get away with it. After all, if you've stolen a dozen items from the same guy he's going to start mighty suspicious of you and be on his guard.
