While in the City of Caverns, there's this exchange between Keldorn and Jaheira (maybe not word for word):

Keldorn, "What do we care about the fate of these creature? I say let them perish from their own foolishness, if that is what fate decrees for them."
Jaheira, "I have never known you to be so judgemental, paladin. Condemn them all to death, and you are no better than they."
Keldorn, "Your words do not sway me, woman. I am not misjudging these creatures. I know, and it is no less a fate than what they would plan for us were the circumstances different."

Quite the moral or philosophical red herring, if that's what you want to turn it into. So how to do you roleplay the decision as to whether to favor the King or the Prince, and why?

    City of Caverns (Choose 1)
    * I help the King, because letting the Sahuagin die off means one less evil race of beings to plague the decent folk of Faerun. - 8% (2)
    * I help the Prince, because goodness demands leaving open the possibility that an individual Sahuagin can find redemption. - 20% (5)
    * I help the Prince, because the greater good is served by allowing the Sahuagin to keep the other underdark races like the Drow and Illithid in check. - 40% (10)
    * I roleplay evil, so I help the Prince because I think evil shark-men are cool to begin with. - 12% (3)
    * I'm undecided. - 20% (5)

I voted undecided, because I'm in Keldorn's camp on this one. I say kill them all. I help the prince to kill the king, and then kill the prince to leave them leaderless and in turmoil. Many more of them will die in the inevitable grab for power that will follow, and they will be further weakened as a whole. So yes, I feel they are simply using the PC, so I feel no ill-will towards killing all of them.

I voted for helping the King, though I do not do it because I want them outta Faerun. IIRC, you get the Impaler from the Prince when you kill him, and you also get a few more grand of XP from helping the King (read a guide about it somewhere...)

I roleplay evil, I do everything for my own gain ;)

The prince drops the head of the Wave Halberd, so you have to kill him if you want the Wave. I believe you only get the Impaler if you kill the king - I'm not sure because I always kill them both, so I get everything...

I usually help the king (you get the Gaunts of Crushing) then kill the prince once all the royal guards are dead. Not for the XP, or items (you get more of both later anyway) but because a) as a heroic character I think their evil race that deserves death for all the surface raids, b) as an evil character I kill things that attempt to imprison and/or threaten me.

As a neutral char I help the prince, aka the underdog.

Also, as a more intelligent or wise heroic character, you could help the king because a) he's decimating his race, and b) he leads raids on the Drow, who are also evil. Kind of a "let them kill each other off" thing.

I generally play it whichever I feel like playing at the game. As already said, both sides are evil so I don't have any problem with using them for the XP and items and then whacking them for more.

If one side was obviously evil and the other obviously good, it might be a trickier call but as they're both evil... whack 'em I say.

The shauguin are an interesting race. Whilst they are using you, they do have a place in the scheme. Just because their code of morals isn't the same as surfacers, I don't think you can justify imposing your morality over theirs. In this instance Jaheira has the correct perspective. I believe that you must help the prince, since to allow the species to continue, is to allow their moral structure to evolve.
As for being used, it issimply a matter of trades. Some mercenary work in exchange for passage. Nothing that you havent done a hundred times before.

I help the king because he is the one least likely to turn on me, and because I agree to help him before I'm approached by the priestess on behalf of the prince. I make a deal and I keep it. Anyway, by the time I'm done with the other underdark races, there's no need for the sahuagin to keep them in check.

The greatest good is done by executing judgment against all the evil races who have earned death. Those individuals who are redeemed by then, or at least are not evil, escape (e.g., Solaufein, Spectator). For the rest, time's up and judgment is at hand.

I help the prince because not only do I know that they will never quite recover from this, but also that balance must be maintained. Though evil fish men, they keep in check the other evils in their area.

As it is said, evil turns upon evil. If I kill all but miss one, that one will gain even more power.
