Danish bicyclist Bjarne Riis recently admitted that he had been using EPO from 1993-98. The management of the Tour de France, which Riis won in 1996, has decided to delete him from Tour history. Is this OK? Why/why not?

I say yes, I dont follow cycling but I think in any sport if an individual / team achieves success by cheating then they should be stripped of anything they won. Juventus FC were stripped of two serie A titles after the match fixing scandal which is the most recent example I can think of; so yes IMO he definately should have his titles taken away.

Y'know, if the history of the Tour were cleaned up to remove every guy who'd ever used performance-enhancing drugs while he competed, there'd be almost no one left. While it's not right to get credit for something that wasn't fairly gained, it's equally not right to strip away one name and not all the others. Was Team Festina removed from the Tour history, after being banned form the ranks?

It's not right to go mucking about with history. If the cyclists were able to get away with substance abuse back in their competitve days, it's the Tour organizers who should take the slap on the wrist for not having better means of detection. Learn from the mistake and move on. To retroactively punish the riders isn't right.

Because most if not all of his closest rivals were probably using the same stuff I'm going to say no. Atleast he has the balls to admit it afterwards and risking a tainted legacy.

Cycling is too dirty to remove someone from the record books just cause he admitted that he used epo. Within cycling the coctail they call blood is/were not cleaner on any other of the competitors. Release it I say. Let the cyclist play with their pills and needles. The sport is to dirty to clean up.

I voted yes - doping is against the rules and therefore cheating. But I can follow the opposite argument as well; it is probably true that almost everybody used EPO or something else in those days, so Riis was, in a sense, the best among "equals".

I say yes because I am for stripping records in all other sports - if you cheat, you don't deserve whatever honors or records you "achieved." End of story.

I agree with Rallymama, though normally I would say go for it.
