    "Best" is a rather subjective term. Do you want easy combat? Do you want your characters to all get along? Are you Good or Evil? How much $ are you willing to spend on healing? What NPC quests appeal to you? Do you want a romance? How do you identify items (store, high lore, Identify spell)? It's quite dependent on your style and preferences. I just wish there were a NPC bard who is not a Blade, to make Identify easier, but that's just one of my preferences.

    How could you forget Jan?!

    By "best" I assume you mean "kicks the most ass in the shortest time possible." In that case, it all depends on who your main character is - if he's a fighter, then you obviously will need some magic users, and vice versa. If he's a niche character (the bard springs to mind), then try to have a party without too many niche characters.
    Basically, you'll probably want an all-round party, but you may find it easier at this stage in the game if you have several frontline fighters (3+) as the monsters only get tougher and thus tend to pummel mages even faster - and bear in mind that said mages will need to crack off Lower Resistance or similar tobe able to get to some of the higher level monsters.
