Shralp, the Universe is not infinite.

Most scientist believe that the universe is very, very large, but it is finite. So you're never going to find a planet of literary genius creating monkeys :D

What then, some of you ask, is at the end of the universe? I don't know exactly what the current thinking is, but there are two possibilities:

1)Nothing. There's just an empty void. Is the "void" infinite? Since nothingness cannot be measured, it's a meaningless question.

    2) The universe is spherical. So there is no "end". Picture the universe as wrapped around a globe. If you travel long enough, you would eventually wind up in the same place you started.

    As for Alien Life<tm>:
I don't know. However, as Shralp said, the possibility of life existing on OUR planet is a result of not millions, but billions and billions (hey I sound like Carl Sagan!) of events that had to occur simultaneously.
A stupefying coincidence of temperature, surface elements, atmosphere, etc, occurred just to make the planet hospitable in the first place, then for life to arise, many more amazing coincidences of biology and...the brain is reeling...shutting down...
It's like hitting the jackpot, the big money lottery, every day for the rest of your life.

If there is anything out there besides us, chances are we will never ever know about it.

How do you know that rocks aren't a form of life? If you look at us and rocks from an infinite perspective (such as God's), we are born and we die in a very small period of time, and don't really seem to do much.
Wheras a rock is constantly growing, shrinking, exchanging matter with other rocks and flinging particles of itself across vast distances, and appears (from a long enough perspective) to be bursting with activity and life.

No you won't see me trying to communicate with a rock, I was just trying to emphasize Shralp's point that you might not even recognize another form of life if you saw it, because it might behave so differently than anything you'd recognize as life.

Heh. Its limits are theoretical. And even if there's a void at the edge (or the exterior and/or interior of a sphere), why wouldn't that void be considered part of the universe? :1eye:

There's been a lot of sightings. Enough that I would say that they're not all complete frauds and hoaxes, if not mass hallucinations or psychosis.

Actually the whole state of NJ is an advanced form of spacecraft, disguised to look like the second smallest state in the Union (we thought smallest would be too obvious). We were sent here millenia ago, to mix with the natives and pollute your stream of concousness with things like Bon Jovi, The Sopranos, and concrete highway dividers (yup, they were invented here). Suck it up, baby. It's our way of slowly taking over the world.

So, is there intelligent life out there? No, we sent all we had with the pilgrim ship.

Edit for: I still have trouble mastering your silly language.

The universe is impossibly huge. I doubt we'd ever find them. And that's assuming that another form of life would be recognizable as such. Who's to say it'd even be visible?

Given the string of coincidences needed to produce life here on Earth (Mark II), I doubt there's any life on other planets. Then again, the universe is infinite... monkeys and Hamlet and all that.

Heh... I used to live on an area that is one of the UFO sightning hotspots in Finland... I have seen a few odd things in my day as well... Heh, there is this woman who claims that aliens kidnapped her after she held a presentation in my old school...

My belief on the matter is:

Universe is infinite, thus everything exists.

I believe that humans are the last thing God created and we are the epitome of His work. Humans are God's masterpiece. To bad we screwed it all.
I can't prove it, though. But you can't prove a religion. It's something you believe...

Specifically, *woman* was God's last creation, according to your Bible: Genesis 2:21-22. Who's the masterpiece around here? :D :D :D

To comment on Nutrimat's statement: The universe is not infinite, it is expanding. After the big bang the universe was growing bigger and bigger and it still is. It is expanding with the speed of light and since you can never reach that speed, you'll never be able to reach the end of the universe, so you can call it infinite. The universe will keep expending until it can't carry it's own weight anymore and then it will collapse and the whole story will begin again with another big bang. But you shouldn't worry, that won't happen for a few billion years.

I will check my Universe in a Nutshell, but I don't think the universe is expanding at the speed of light.

    On topic:
Many people believe there is intelligent life elsewhere, just because in all the vastness of space (I'm getting tired of typing universe), it seems really unlikely that we'd be the only ones. But just because something is unlikely, or highly improbable, that does not make it untrue (or true).

C'Jakob: Just because many, many nutcases claim to have been visited by aliens that does not make it true. Back in the dark ages, people believed that the earth was the center of the universe. Almost EVERYONE believed this. But that did not make it true. But by your argument it would have been, just because so many people claimed to have this belief, that surely ONE of them had to have been right.

I will believe in little grey men when I see one!

assuming there's not life in the universe except for earth is in my opinion incredibly arrogant. One has to assume there's life under given circumstances of possibly unlimited space.

as for the expansion of the universe. We're clueless! just guessing, since we got nothing better to do :) , another matter if belief.
