    [IMG] *ahem*

Before I begin this post, I'd like to say that powergaming is not inferior to any other style of playing, or vice versa. This is not an excuse for the people who "know" how to role-play to denounce the people who aren't as role-playing as you.

    Thanks.

Anyways, Sean K. Reynolds has an interesting diagram of four general D&D-player-types. It's pretty interesting. I'm a basic role-player, by the way. I'm just interested on how the SPers play D&D. :)

I would say that I am a storyteller who is pretty high up on the scale, close to the thinker, but quite far out on the strategic axis. I havent played very much so I lack experience to really know whether this is how it is but it is how I think it is.

I used to be a Thinker, But I seem to have been shifting to a Storyteller. It also depends on the kind of game a DM is running and the style of the other players in a party. When you play in a fun and balanced (not class, but personality) party, each player can develop a character to his/her own needs and expectations. The most important thing is that each player has fun and the best way to achieve this is by letting each player have the playing-style he is most enjoying himself with. When you've been playing AD&D with the same group as long as I have (15+ years) you know what other players in your group expect, how they want to play the game and how they enjoy the game the most...

Character Actor, for sure I always try to make my char ¨real¨ with a personality that ain't mine. I also like to ¨play¨ him with strange gesture and strange voice it's kind of funny you know?

Storyteller, definitely. Give me plot! Anyday I'll sacrifice gold and glory to be told a story.

Probably basic roleplayer. I take perverse pleasure in solving tactical problems on the fly. I feel I live then. In the same time, I rarely miss some more distant goals. As I look out for casters to butcher and backstabbers next, I know that so soon as the road opens, I need to pay a courtesy visit to the goblin leader on that hill and assure a safe retreat.

I like my characters to be powerful, but I'm touchy when it comes to logic, so I value realism and I'm not in for abusing loopholes in rules. Similarly, I hate illogical rules that seem to have been made to get rid of the problem rather than solve it. For instance, I don't stick to title hierarchy from 2E books where German-style ritter is given as an equivalent of European-style count or Anglo-Saxon-style earl rather than knight that it really is. There are many such inconsistencies in d&d and many historical inaccuracies in what is meant to be historical and not merely fictional basing on history.

As I said, I like intense experience in combat and I like power. However, I rather go for diplomatic solutions and value good roleplaying, character action and interaction. I act as kind of psychoanalyst, too, so I have some distance when it's needed and am able to predict his behaviour and his moves with some logical consistency rather than act as myself or give myself to joyful improvisation. However, I still indulge in character acting (see the yawning drowsy young paladin who thinks it's morning when the sun's setting) and I know what the character has gone through in the past and what he wants to achieve in the future. That probably gives me a healthy view ;)

I think I am a character actor. In my case, the whole point is to get out from MY head and inside the characer's head, if only for a short while...

I notice that no one is admitting to be a power gamer? or perhaps those that are power gamers don't see themselves as a power gamer?

According to that I would be a powergamer. I don't really see myself as a powergamer. The term "powergamer" generally is a syonym for munchkin or rollplayer. I'm not like that all. I like combat, yeah. But without roleplaying, intrigue and the like, it wouldn't be any fun. Some of my best moments in roleplaying were simple conversations. I don't think it's all as black and white as people some see it.

This is something I've wondered about.

You are an adventurer, you're in a deep, dark cave with orcs everywhere. Given a choice between knowingly abusing the rules of magic or dying, what would you choose.

Ya know, when I roll up my character I'm pretty much a power gamer. I try to max stats, pick an effective class, good spells, etc. But when I play I'm usually too distracted by whatever goofy personality I've come up with to care about how many things I kill.

    I'm strange.
I begin... thinking powergaming style. Then i play (ALFA :) ) and its completely awsome and i completely forget about any powergaming stuff. For a day at least.
And then i start thinking how could i bring out the best of my character :o

I guess i'd need constant daily dose of amazing RPing to completely exclude powergaming from play.
But it's cool in a way, couse it helps you survive in combat, having a strong character for his/her level.

So i just voted basic roleplayer. :)
