Yes, I romanced AnnoyMan through to the end. If romance is what you'd call it. Between his insecurity, his blaming me for every wrong decision in his life, and his criticism of everything I did... I decided to check the girls out.

Aerie whined too much. Although she did improve with time.

Jaheira was very off putting, and kept interrupting quests and party membership to go on secret missions. Although out of nowhere she developed a sense of humor once.

Viconia plays rough. "I like you." "I was lying when I said I liked you." "I was lying when I said I was lying." I dunno. Mebbe the challenge is exciting to some of you guys.

I'm trying Solaufein now. I'm hoping for better.

I've done them all. Here are my thoughts:

Anomen: Contrary to what many say, it isn't all that bad. It is also the easiest, so long as you don't call him an idiot or a fool. The voice may get to you after a while, but you learn to live with it. When they wrote up his romance, I think they were operating on the idea that he was supposed to epitomize the valiant knight of lore -- truth, justice, protector of the innocent and all that. Who secretly doesn't want that?

Aerie: Once I got past the continual whining about the loss of her wings (every 2 frigging minutes, it seemed), her romance wasn't bad either. The thing I found odd was how quickly she became pregnant and how quickly she delivered the baby. Some of the conversations during this were also good (especially Jaheira & Korgan). I really liked the idea of Haer'Dalis as your rival for Aerie's affections. That was a good move, though I'd have rather had him as an alternate male romance.

Jaheira: For all the bugs in her romance, this was great. Lengthy due to all the numerous quests associated with it, but worth the effort. To see her go through an identity crisis right in front of you made you really stop to think about how to answer her questions. Not nearly as easy as Anomen & Aerie, which is part of the reason that I liked it so much. The other reason is Jaheira herself, but that's another post. :)

Viconia: Another one that isn't as easy as it seems. Tolerating her insults was the biggest challenge here. Not knowing from one minute to the next how to respond to her, without screwing up the romance, made this one a thinker too. Also the idea that she doesn't want a "yes" man for a lover, but someone with a backbone and a mind made this refreshing to play. Guess like real romances -- know when to say yes and when to put your foot down.

For the record, I voted for Viconia.

When I didn't know about the fireheaded and cute sorcerer Kelsey, I loved Annoyman. But those days are over.

As for female romances, I won't play them cause Aerie is a whiner, Jaheira I just REALLY DON'T like and Viconia, cause I don't play men. : )

Well, since best romance involves a comparison with the other two, I'll start with why Viccy and Aerie don't get my nods.

Viccy - "Beauty is only skin deep". That seems to be the theme of this romance. I occassionally do this when I'm roleplaying as an evil s.o.b. who's out to become the next Lord of Murder. When you get down to it, she's one cruel and sick woman who burned her sister alive, enjoyed it (whatever verbiage she provides to otherwise), committed murder and god knows what else for pleasure many times before your character was even born. That should be reason enough to steer clear. Granted, she's from that Drow harsh culture and you can change her alignment much later. But please ... in real life I'm not going to pursue a woman who takes things to that degree. I'm currently satisfying my curiosity with the Viconia Flirt Pack. Quite the *cough* *cough* escapade of virtual S & M, and totally appropriate for the way I'm playing my evil S.O.B. But again ... in real life, no way.

Aerie - Aerie is not without her charms, of the very innocent variety. I've looked around with Explorer, and I do like the way her character evolves later on. But somehow, I just don't trust myself to make it through all that early 'wounded dove' stuff without wanting to scream. A Beholder is duping innocents into his fraudelent cult ... yet again you barely survived that last battle ... Irenicus stole your soul as well as Imoen's ... the Shade Lord is behind mass murders in the Umar Hills ... Through all of this, what does she have to talk about? Yep, her wings.

    Now for my choice?

    Jaheira, "Nature's Servant awaits"
Much as I love this woman, I'm not going to type out everything all over again. Please see the "Misunderstood NPCs" for my perceptions of Jaheira's character.

As for the romance itself, I find it fascinating and touching to watch her go through so much inner turmoil and conflict on account of the player. There are so many factors involved, honoring Khalid's memory, her feelings for the protagonist, her guilty conscience over the Harpers who died after being duped by Galvarey and Dermin, her identity as a Harper, etc. Some snappiness is to be expected. And when she does come around (thump thump, thump thump).

Also, it's just so "Beren and Luthien" (no pun intended)that Jaheira is willing to jump to your side in an instant (ambush at the Harpers Hold) and expects no less from you (the Ertof Dand and bandits ambush).
