Powerful legitimate characters

By legitimate characters I mean no minmaxing, no aforeknowledge, no self-conscious characters and preferably as much realism as possible.

By powerful I mean everything from significant advantage to insane uberness, but not only. Versatility that makes your character the "doer" also counts.

As you might have guessed, I'm asking primarily for interesting builds. The insane power of a level 30 barbarian on rage or the versatility of a level 30 fighter with a standard choice of feat dictated by a healthy sense of uberness is not exactly what I mean. Be it iconic or be it atypical, let it not be boring, please.

I'm not sharing anything myself in order not to turn this thread into a discussion of a bunch of characters from the opening post.

Please also specify if your character is an idea or if it's battle-tested.

 

A Great Gold Wyrm sounds legitimate and powerful to me, so, well, there you go.

My best character that I ever played was actually not in D&D, but a similar character could certainly be built. In the Rolemaster system, he was a warrior-mage with a background option that allowed him to advance his unarmed combat skills as a monk. I made him a generalist with a wide selection of utility spells. I think I had gone after just one offensive spell group. He ended up being pretty poor in combat, but in just about any other situation he was the go-to guy.

Unfortunately, the campaign was fairly short-lived as the game master and the other player were involved in a fatal car crash.

In D&D terms, he would be a Monk/Sorcerer or Monk/Wizard. Either way, the monk class level would be lower than the spell caster level.

 

Well in NWN with a barb1/cleric x it is possible to get 30 strength by character level 4. High base stre + str domain + rage + bull's strength = kills everything. Kinda takes advantage of a game bug, that it allows +stat spells and items to stack, but who cares? It works.

 

there's nothing interesting about a character lvl 20+

they're dull, face it, lol

So now, legitimate powerful character. Someone with high intelligence, wisdom and charisma. Plotting stuff all around, gathering cohort of followers, bribing, buying assassins,...
Sure, someone like that isnt powerful in a sense that he can beat up a minotaur while supping, but he surely holds more power than any such bully.
Oh, he might even be lower than 5th level and already hoarding all kinds of magical items and ruling a kingdom or a city.

After all the stereotype "power" is roughly measure in how much baddies one can beat. Now if you gather an army, it's surely stronger (not to mention more impressive) than acquiring a sword that shines a bit more.
