It's a pity, true. OTOH, it's good that he knows what it is - I'm sure that "phantom stroke" of his must have been no less worrying. I wish it hadn't been Alzheimer's, though - I think it's a poor way for a man of letters and wit to go.

You never know when he will, though. He may yet outlive some of us.

yeah. personally i feel this disease is even worse than cancer, as you lose your ability to function but we have no idea if you are aware of it inside your own mind. it's really sad.

NOOOO nono. Something like that just isn't supposed to happen to someone like Terry Pratchett. It's like when Douglas Adams dropped from a heart attack. :sosad:

    Uhhh...

    :o

Well.... maybe it might end up that he'll rewrite some of his earlier novels, only with more experience and polished skill now, they'll turn out better? :hahaerr:

Yeah yeah, I know - funny as a crutch...I'm just grasping at straws to try to find a funny, 'bright-side' to all this... :(

If you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go hug my Discworld books... :(

A late addition to this thread, but worth mentioning that he's now made several public statements about his intention to keep battling the disease. He put his money where his mouth is by making a one million pound donation to the British Alzheimer's disease foundation. His British fans have a "match it for Pratchett" campaign going to donate the same amount, collectively.

My father died with the disease and it is a difficult and sad way to go. But better to know and fight it, in my opinion, humble though it is.

    Fight on, Terry.

I think he intends to keep on writing as long as he can but it's a cruel blow, especially as he is not that old. I have met his daughter a few times (she used to work with my boyfriend) although I've not met Terry - I know she is pretty stressed about it. Alzheimers is hardest on the family, as I'm sure revmaf can testify.

I just saw this thread -- DAMN! He is a superlative author who is also accessible to many, and this just breaks my heart. I'm praying for a miracle.
