My bard can write level 7+ mage spells to his book, but if I remove the XP cap will he ever be able to memorize them? Do I need to change something else to accomplish this, or is it just not possible?

AFAIK a bard can never cast above level 6 spells. You would have to hack the spell tables to allow for such.

Grab the P&P spell progression tweak from BG2 tweaks at G3, and your bard will be able to cast up to level 8 spells.

In the vanilla game the great asset of the bard is being able to cast more powerful spells earlier of course after level 20 this advantage is maxed out and a bard never gets as many spells as a wizard.
UAI can be great though provided you get some items which increases the number of spells you can cast (you won't cast higher level spells that way).

The level 50 cap "extender" changes the spell progression of Bards and allows them to cast spells up to level 8. That component is, I think, far too cheesy, as it makes them much more powerful than they should be, considering they advance in levels much faster than mages.

Actually, I believe the level 50 mod takes bardic casting out to level 9.

The PnP tables component which allows the bard to progress all the way up to level 8 wizard spells from BG2 tweaks, on the other hand, is actually bringing the game in line with P&P high level campaign rules.. After level 20, bardic progression is supposed to continue to a maximum of level 8 wizard spells.

Wow, I didn't know that Drew!

I think the fact that 3e was just coming out when BG2 came out had a large influence on the game as well (The Barbarian and Sorcerer are similar to their 3e counterparts). 3e Bards have level 8 spells IIRC

3.0 bards max at level 20 with 6th level spells.
