question about items that cast spells

If a non-caster has equipped an item that lets him cast a spell that has a stat based on caster level (for example a fighter wearing the Holy Might Ring), at what level will the spell be cast? If the character has no caster levels is the spell just at level 1, or does it use the character level instead?

What happens if a character has two caster classes and uses an item to cast a spell that either class can do, such as a wizard 12/cleric 6 using the Wand of Animate Dead? What level of undead would the wand produce?

The items never use caster lvls, stats or feats for DC of any given offensive spell. They have a fixed lvl and DC, I do not know the details but they are , quite simply put, weak. So do not rely on them too much.

Items and wands etc have a set caster level as desided in the item file. Usually lowest level required to cast the spell.

Raptor and Silverstar are correct. Items that cast spells have their level and any save DC hard-coded into the ITM file. Thus, for the most part, spells embedded in items are generally pretty weak. The same is often true for potions as well.

You can still get away with using some of the items with a backup character. Some items allow you to cast spells that you might not want your Sorcerer to waste spell slots on, for instance the Ring of Mage Armour (effective until you get some better protection) or the pipes of the wheezing Dragon (especially at lower levels since the damage done by Aganazar's Scorcher won't get any better with higher levels but it can be still very handy against certain fire vulnerable enemies).

No doubt that some items will still have some use. Even at level 1, mage armor is good for 1 hour, which is certainly a useful duration. And low level fireballs are better than no fireball at all. And so on.

...or the medallion which casts Heal in HoF...now that is one handy spell-casting item! :thumb:

Lightning wands suck though, everybody saves easily and the bolts do pitiful damage. Sigh. It's only real use is animating the golem in the underdark. Lighting spells are rather weak in IWD2 anyway. There is also a wand of fire somewhere in the game but it is either secret or random, I forgot where I saw it. Sorry.

The Necklace of Missiles is hot stuff too. You can find/buy at least two.

I don't remember having any trouble with the duration of the Mage Armour spell from the ring in my games... It was definitely more than one hour the last time I played.
