ok, so i just restarted(cause i got my @$$ kicked way to easily by some orcs. So i obviously started a new character and i re rolled until i got a decent set of stats. my real question here is: what is it when u get a strength of, oh, 18/75? is that a good thing, does it give any special advantages, or what? If any of u guys know, could u please tell me?

The number after the 18 is called percentile strength and it's only available for fighter types (fighter, ranger, paladin), and yes, it is a good thing. Essentially percentile strength is broken into 5 regions:

    01-50
    51-75
    76-90
    91-99
    00

Each of these regions has different bonuses with regard to THAC0, Damage and Weight Allowances (Encumbrance).

BTW this is all detailed in the manual...

If you still haven't found it in the manual, there is a complete list of the benefits to be had from various stats. They are all shown in a number of tables at the back of the manual 'Character Ability Scores'. In the UK manual they start on Page 117.

As to strength, it also allows you to carry more weight in the inventory and increases your chances of 'bashing open' locked doors, treasure etc (although this doesn't seem to be used much in BG2 and you're better off using a thief to lockpick stuff).

There is also a temptation not to worry too much about your character's strength because of the number of belts, gauntlets and weapons in the game that raise it above 18 anyway. However, in the spirit of roleplaying, a fighter should have high strength.

Yep, click on the sword (attack) icon, then click on it again (so that it gets a red outline), then click on the treasure chest (or whatever) you want to bash open. It's the same method you need to attack a non-hostile target. As I said though, BG2 doesn't seem to use it much and I don't think you get any expereince for doing it (unlike the thief you gets experience for lock picking). On the strength Ability Modifiers table you'll see that, even with 18 strenght you only get a 20% chance of success.

Yeah, but If you have a lowsy thief like Nalia in your party, you'll have to bash a couple of those chests open!
And with my 19 strewngth, I get 50% (I recently got Crom Fayer, gives 25 strength, I believe this gives 80% to bashing...)
