The best of all is the shadow-dragon-scale but you´ll have to earn it first ... nice leather armors are the ghoul skin (unseeing eye quest), aeger´s skin (ribald´s adventurer´s mart iirc) and orkish leather armor (chr -1; de´Arnise keep)

Sorry - I had to translate the names from german into english ... maybe they don´t match ...

Isn't there a long bow+2 defender somewhere, or is that in IWD? Anyway, cloaks and rings are also a good way to improve your ac. Oh, and do remember to use a character with max dex.

The Night's gift is awarded to you after succesfully completing the Shade Lord Quest. It is Leather armour +5, AC 3 I think and +20% to hide in shadows. Very useful.

The Armor of Deep Night, Studded Leather +4, is also AC3, Several of the Helmets ( Helm of Glory, Helm of Balduran, Etc.) Grant an AC bonus of +1, Some Rings also grant an AC bonus (Ring of Gaxx bonus +2, Ring of Earth Control bonus +1, Etc.), and some Cloaks will grant an AC bonus (Cloak of Balduran bonus +1). It is also helpful to have the highest possible Dexterity, Elven Archer Dex19, +1 if you read the proper Book.

My gear when I played an archer was (final)
    Shadow Dragon Scales (AC 1)
Cloak of The Sewers (+1 Bonus)
Ring of Earth Control (+1 Bonus)
    Totalling AC of -5

    good gear, I would add:
-Ring of Gaxx ( AC -7 + fast rgeneration)
-single weapon style ( AC -8 when in melee)
-boots of avoidance to improve AC vs. missiles; alternatively boots of speed

btw - the restriction to * in melee weapons allows you to try out some more unusual weapons: bastardswords - where Jhor the bleeder is a fine weapon ... and you´ll like to have ablunt weapon vs. skelettons and golems too.
