I see this gentleman's name come up quite often. If I were to begin reading his work, where would I begin?

Icewind Dale Trilogy would be a good choice...

I must agree. I began with the Dark Elf trilogy, but as that is meant to be a prequel it is out of context if you have not read the Icewind Dale trilogy. If you're going to get into R.A. Salvatore's works that's definitely the place to start.

Personally, I've read 25 of his books since I first read one three years ago and loved them all.

Just to clarify, his writings begin with the Icewind Dale trilogy but he later wrote a prequel called the Dark Elf Trilogy? And thanks to both for your speedy responses.

    *Disagrees with those above*
Start with the Dark Elf Trilogy, which is far superior to all his other works.

Agree with aikee here, I've read the dark elf trilogy before the Icewind dale trilogy. It helps to better understand the character of Drizzt.

Reading "The Dark Elf Trilogy" after "The Icewind Dale Trilogy" would be a mistake. You will simply waste your time. I did. I read "The Crystal Shard" to begin with, then finished the rest of the trilogy. After reading "The Dark Elf Trilogy", I couldn't help but to read "The Icewind Dale Trilogy" all over again. I suggest you start from what should have been the start.

Definietly read the Icewind Dale Trilogy first, it is by far his better writing.

I don't really think it matters if you read the Icewind Dale Trilogy or the Dark Elf trilogy first. Especially if you'll be reading the other series anyways. My Dad chose to read the Icewind Dale trilogy first but my brother and I read the Dark Elf trilogy first. Either way is good. (Though I personally thought that the Dark Elf trilogy was better than Icewind Dale -- but maybe that's just me)

But just to be abnormal, I'd recommend his Crimson Shadow Trilogy which is my favorite series by R.A. Salvatore. But I suppose it depends if you want to read R.A. Salvatore books in general or start with the Forgotten Realms (Drizzt) books. If you would rather start with "Drizzt" books then I'd reccomend either the Dark Elf or Icewind Dale trilogy. Don't forget to read the Cleric Quintet sometime though cuz those are some mad fun books. Oo oi! :)

Go with Demon Wars. Far superior to any of his Forgotten Realms stuff.

Only for the first couple of books or so, then the Demon wars saga turns into the worst swill I have ever read. Abysmally bad.

The worst Demon Wars book is still better than his best Forgotten Realms book IMO. I would have to say his FR books are to his DW books as Diablo is to BG2. His FR books are good for a quick entertaining read, but the DW books give you more than just hack n' slash action.
