The band has announced it has split.

Now, IMO they haven't made a decent album in a decade, but I did like many of their early works.

Terrible. I'm going to listen to every album I have of them and cry in a corner (ok perhaps not that last part :p)

I'm with dmc. I love, LOVE, R.E.M. Fables of the Reconstruction and Green are two of my all-time favorite albums. That said, ever since Bill Berry left the band in the late 90's, they just haven't sounded the same. Which is odd, since he wasn't a songwriter - it was just a bad milestone, I guess. They've been so dormant for so long I'd kind of assumed they'd already broken up.

Oh well. I have all their albums so I can't say I'll ever really "miss them."

I agree they should havd hung it up long ago. I used to be a big fan in the day - Fables and Murmer were great - but later records were at times awful and seemed to be informed primarily by Stipe's rapidly emerging ego and self-conscious writing. ("What?? Everyone loves me?? Okay, I used to just mumble lyrics and vocals, but now I've got something to say! Listen up while I enunciate!")

I'm not sure anyone has ever liked being preached at in music. The greats who have some transcendant message don't convey it by singing "Ronald Reagan is an a-hole" or "You must pity the underpriveleged or you are an insensitive boob!"

Never been much of an fan, even though I liked a few songs of theirs.
And I agree with the sentiment, that a band should quit in time, and not try to drag-on.
