It's too bad that the most powerful character of each basic category is of evil alignment. My favorite parties (and the most powerful, IMO) are ones where the characters are all specialists in what they do. But with the cast of NPCs available in BG2, it seems that if you want to have a good-aligned party, you are forced to construct a group full of multi/dualclass characters who don't do any one thing particularly well.
The evil party of Korgan+Viconia+Edwin, now that's a force to be reckoned with!

 

I couldn't rank them by strength...But my favs are, in order:

I think that the weapens the game offers you also play a great part in the NPC rank, like the Holy A. for Keldorn, and Valygar deseves better with C'fury/Corthala fam. blade!

 

My favs are in my party actually: I have Minsc, Keldorn, Mazzy, Jaheira and Imoen to support my halfling cavalier. I don´t want to rank them anyway, so just some thoughts about my favourites:

-Minsc is cool. Some people may dislike him for he´s not a brain giant, but he´s a good, tough, reliable and honest compagion. He´s a great fighter too and with boo he forms an invincible combat formation.

-Kheldorn is pretty good once he got the gaunts of dex, he´s a good fighter with the great holy avenger, but his prime and unvaluable bonus is his dispell magic - a real lifesaver.

-Mazzy is definitely the best archer in the game: I gave her bracs of archery, bow of gesen and at lvl-17 her THACO was about -10. She was doing an average damage of 17 with three attacks per round. And for melee: she finally had single weapon style and *** or **** in shortswords, using cutthroat ...

-Viconia is a great cleric with a good wis, she´s only not in my party for she´s evil and I´m playing a cavalier now

-Imoen is a really good mage and provides all the thieving abilities you need once you went to the underdark.

-Jaheira: The only druid (great spells like call insects or insect plague) able to wear a full plate mail ... great with sling of everard/ sling of Avoreen (beholder dungeon underdark), and she can use waterblade scimitar+3 (Ust Natha, underdark). Good AC and good fighting abilities.

-Edwin: A great mage, the only pure one available in the game, disadvantageous is that he´s evil so he doesn´t match my cavalier at the moment.

-Yoshimo: Despite some personal sentiment against this guy, he´s an acceptable thief (though restricted for he´s a bountyhunter)

 

Top 5 NPC's

1. Anomen - unpopular I know but I have my reasons (see many other posts)
2. Minsc - so hard to drop him
3. Ediwn - a class act, funny too esp. w/ Minsc
4. Keldorn - I found him brilliant but he's so damn 'Goody good' that he gets to be a pain regarding quest options
5. Imoen - I went from hating her to likeing her (see previous posts)

Worst 5 NPCs

1. Nalia - annoying, useless, poorman's Imoen
2. Cernd - keep him as a Werewolf for christ's sake "Nature this, nature that" what a cheesy guy.
3. Aeiree - levels out on both classes before she can be good plus annoying
4. Jan - many like him but he dies all the time and lacks some of my fave spells.. good pickpocket though
5. Jaheria - I dislike her stern voice but because of this I haven't played with her for long ever

It must be noted I haven't played the hated Bard Haer'Dalis (or whatever) or Viconica yet and only played with Nalia, Valygur, Airee and Jaheria briefly.

 

Well, if you list the names with their surnames included, Edwin should be Edwin Odesseiron or merely 'Sir' for a less... syllable workout. And the others should be:

First on the list should be Dudette...


But, since she's not in the game, I'll stick with my Viconia above all others. She was my right hand both times (no, I'm sick of that game and there won't be third time - until next decade). Other NPC's are just meet for swords.
After Viconia I must say the funniest is Haer'Dalis, not like Jan Jansen with his stories sucked outta finger. So, I would put him in the party also. Then (all of you say BOOOOOO) Anomen. Get him Sir title and improve war hammers - he's almost invincible.
And last, I won't forget Mazzy (not because her boobies!) and Minsc.

I go with :

best:

1. valygar-- unbelievable with c-fury and his katana.. and if you substitute crom-f for the off hand.....OUCH!!

2. minsc--second best personality in the game

3. aerie--I know--only 16 int/wis... but this is crucial for a pure kensai (that I was)...

4. jan jansen--best personality in the game.. and the description of his gear!!! would have kept him the whole game but wanted imoen back (for a yoshimo trade) for the plot's-sake.. ALSO, his quest left a sour taste in my mouth.. I wanted to hunt down that wife/child abuser and kill him for jan and humanity

5. jaheira--harper's call made her very usable. if she did not have this spell-- I would have dumped her at chapter 2. btw--I think her BG1 portrait was alot better than her BG2 portrait.

I had a strong dislike for edwin---to strange and evil. I thought nalia was .. err.. weak. Yoshimo was very fun because he spiced up the plot. Viconia was just pure evil. I didn't even pick up any of the rest (in fact, I never talked to korgan)

 

HA! I don't know if it was intentional as a satirical, ironic thought, but Tal, Parvini called you Taul...

Best NPC-s(in my opinion)

Minsc(I just can't drop him, I can't!)

Korgan(He's a tank and I like his harsh dwarven tone)

Anomen(Most of you hate him, but I think he is a very-very useful fellow)

Keldorn(with the gauntlets of dex and the Holy Avanger he is a Big Good killin machine, but I don't like his manner.

Imoen(me little sister, she has more spells per level than other mages, godly heritage perhaps?)

Edwin(my favorite mage, he's so BAD and funny!)

Nalia(She is a good mage, but she has no personality)

Jan(Jannie is my favorite multi class char, he's like my grandpa!)

Yoshimo(I like this thief, good character, and an excellent rouge)

Jaheira(my love, only useful when summoning fire elementals and insect swarm)

Viconia(hot mamma, but weak as a kitten)

Mazzy(I never picked her up because she's so small, but she has some godd abilities I heard)

Useless NPC-s

Airie(She's so melodramatic! It sickens me!, good spellcasting abilities but so few HP-s)

Valygar(No comment!)

Cernd(absolute useless, when Jaheira is in your party.)

Haer D'alis(also no comment, he speaks like he was a drunk)

Interesting review of the NPC's. I have played enough games so that all of the NPC's have joined one of my parties at some time.

I believe the most powerful fighters are Korgan and Valygar. Korgan for pure brutatlity with an Axe and he can take damage due to his high Constitution and massive HP's. I include Valygar only because if he is equipped correctly he can be as destructive as Korgan -yep. Dual wielding Celestial Fury with his Family blade I was "amazed" at how many times he would hit an opponent AND the opponent was stunned. Literally, if you are stunned, then you cant hit back. Which is great beacuse with the Black Dragon Scale, Ring of Earth and Cloak of Sewers his AC is not near what Korgan's can be.

Viconia is a tremendous addition if given an item of Strength. Her Dexterity greatly assits with her AC and Missle attacks.

I'll only comment on one more NPC due to everyone already knows about the pro's/con's of Edwin, Minsc, Jan (he's great!), Nalia, Aerie, Anomen, Jaheria, Cernd, Haer Dalis (I tried him but... no way in hell...!)Keldorn and Imoen.

But it took some time for me to conclude that Mazzy rocks!!! If you equip her with what I similarly equipped her with you will not be dissapointed. Of couse make sure she gets 5 slots in short bows and give her the Tungian Bow (sp?) -the item taken off the corpse of the "key holder" to free the slaves in the CC. You know the one with the "attack leapord".

That bow gives an extra +1 attack/round. Mazzy will then have 5 attacks per round, her high Dexterity bonus gives bonuses for missle attacks and AC, her Fighter class gies her a superior THAC0, deck her out in the better Fighter armor options as I did, add the +2 Missle Weapon Guantlets, and then give her magic arrows "galore". I say that because she will "race" through scores and scores of arrows in no time at all.

Not only did she hit opponents at a ridiculously low THAC0 with consistency but she was hard to hit in full armor and dealt out 16 to 22 points of damage per hit up to 5 hits per round. That's massive amounts of damage to back up my main character on the frontline!

Yes, i had Mazzy first time round, she is good in Mellee too having 5* in short swords eventually... there are loads of cool short swords in this game. Also her haste, invoke courage and other innate abilities are only rivalled by Keldorn's

 

I only like mins and edwin

 

my favorite NPC's

Korgan - cuz i like his character and personality besides, he is one of the best fighter's in the game

Imoen - she's hot, i like her the best among all the female NPC's

Yoshimo - he's kinda cool in his own freakish way
