After reading this topic several times, I've come to the conclusion that rap is not a very popular genre of music for Spers.

    I'm rather confused.

Why is rap such a bad genre, compared to say, death metal?

Heck, while I'm at it, I'll ask a more flammable question. Why is boy-band-music such a bad genre, compared to say, instrument-playing-band music?

It's a mater of gout. It's not so easily explainable, but boy bands are crap and so is rap mostly. I would also refrain from using the word 'music' with reference to those kinds of sound. Ah, and add death metal to the list.

Some raps not bad. In freinds car I "have" to listen to it.. Afterwhile it gets a little more enjoyable, but nothing like my punk/emo music.

Boy Bands? "Most" Metal, and Country. Dont like them but at the same time I dont say they stink or anything similair. Its Your choice to listen to whatever you want. And flaming others for thier tastes is just silly. I could/would respect someone as an artist for thier talent, but it doesnt mean I enjoy thier music. Its basically Your taste, there is no right and wrong, good and bad and so forth. I myself Dont only listen to punk/emo, I like some oldies Like Frank Sinarta and others. I allso Listen to some Christian Bands, some fall in the rock genre some in the punk or emo. But I dont care "where" they belong or what others think. Music is a way to express yourself and you should do it freely.

[IMG] You know, in my humble opinion Rap is crap. So is Boy-Band music. Now there's only a few things that make these crap. Even worse is MC-ing.

    Rap
    1. I can't simply stand the whole Rap-Gangsta attitude, I really can't. If you want to "Bling Bling" then do it somewhere fecking else!
    2. The lyrics are usually (not always) a load of crap, which have no meaning except "I shot him, had sex with her, then smoked some pot."
    3. Rap ruins everything. Take J.Lo's song "Jenny From the Block", a perfectly reasonably song in my opinion; until she get's the black guy rapping.

    Boy Bands
    1. Most (though not all) boy bands are manufactured rubbish, who only perform songs they didn't write, that are popular at that moment, or that will make them money.
    2. They all seem to cater for teenage girls. No other person(s).
    3. I heartily congratulate Robbie Williams from leaving the boy band Take-That and striking out on his own; Top artist!

    MC-ing...
... is a load of crap too. If you don't know what MC-ing is: An MC is a guy who says words (not sings) just says words along with a "Boom-Tchk-Boom-Tchk" beat by a DJ. MCing is very popular in Britain, and the "Townie" people. A typical MC lyric:

    "Original Pirate Material
    Yer listening to the streets
    Lock down your aerial
    Make yerself at home
We got diesel or some of that homegrown
Sit back in yer throne, turn off yer phone
Cos this is our zone "
("Has it Come to This?" - The Streets)

Needless to say, this is crap too.

Rap sucks, as a genre, because it lacks any originality. Every song on every album by every rap artist today is nothing but "Bling bling," "Pimpin' Ain't Easy," "All about the Benjamins." Every rap artist popular right now has pretty much the same message: "All da hos love me, I school any MC dat steps to mah mad skills, me and all my ghetto fabulous homies are gonna throw a party at a million dollar mansion in a neighborhood where we're not wanted, jus' cuz we mad pimpin', yo!" I find rap thoroughly repellant because it lacks any heart and soul. I'm not crazy about death metal either, but at least they play their own instruments and are semi-skilled as musicians. The topics and agendas also differ from band to band. Fast-paced metal like that is actually pretty challenging to play (I know, because I used to).

Comparing boy-bands to instrument-playing-bands is like comparing an actor on ER to an actual emergency room doctor. The actors look better and are much more visually and dramatically entertaining, while the real emergency room doc actually went to med school, interned, spent his residency and saves lives for real. Most boy bands don't write their own songs, they definately don't play their own instruments with any skill, and are basically dancing monkeys playing to a fad. They also have little or no control over what they make and are essentially puppets. Real instrument playing bands, for the most part, do everything themselves. From the music, to the lyrics, to the direction of the group. Oh yeah - and they don't suck.

Put simply: Boy bands are performers, Musicians are artists. Big difference.

Rap: I am not too familiar with Rap music. So, I have no deeper knowledge. But I like some stuff, Eminem (yes, very funny and I don't care what objections others may have), Nelly (country grammar just caught me).

Boy- and Girlgroups: The annoying part is, they jump around and cover songs. That's about it. Then they are much too common and seem omnipresent. They're like bad advertisement that just gets repeated and repeated and repeated. And in 90% of the cases the original is better anyway. And in 50% of the cases, you didn't even want to listen to the original.

 I probably should have clarified this in my first post - why are said genres worse musically that other genres?

(And I don't know about you, but I'd prefer to watch ER than watch doctors go about their jobs. ;) )

Rap is a form of poetry; just not a very good one. It certainly isn't original, but that is not surprising, since one of the underpinnings of the social group that listens to this stuff is the concept that the Blacks in America are a group with no future, thanks to the oppression of Whitey. No future, depressing, crime, shooting, shooting up, sex, those are the supposed only things that this disadvantaged group can look forward to, at least according to rap's proponents.

Oh, musically speaking, IMHO, there is no melody to most of this stuff.
As far as I am concerned, most metal isn't much better. It's all noise to me. The louder the better, right? Not in my book!

[IMG] I actually quite like rap music. It's not usually the actual lyrics it's usually how their spoken and what they are 'meant' to mean, and if the words are rucbbish, the beat is alright.

personally I'm not too keen on classical music

I was a hardcore hiphopper a few years ago. Well half a decade ago but the stuff I liked then I still think is good. Much hiphop made in the early 90's is really good. Dr Dre, the first Wu-Tang album, early Snoop and so on. Great rhymes and beats, music with *quality*. I dont like much of the modern stuff but I still like Dr Dre and I think he and Eminem actually are good artists. I dont buy hiphop albums anymore but I dont think the genre suck.

I just like to think that it's a matter of taste. I usually listen to music that most people hate.

I don't know what style Eminem is in at this time but some of his new tracks are pretty neat. Especially Sing for the Moment.

I hate pop, dance and whatever (including boybands). Many people has asked me why and I just say that I don't think it's art.. it's a moneymachine they make and most of them don't do it for fun but profit. The music sounds alike and there's really nothing new in those new hits. Also, I hate fashion. Why? Because it manipulate people, make them use money on clothes they don't even like and make them listen to crappy music.

Okay, it went a little :yot: but when I get started.. I just can't seem to stop.

[IMG] there have always been arguments against different types of music, there has been times against pop, jazz and a olt of other styles, now it's the turn of Rap music to take the hits.

each type of music takes a certain type of listener, those who can't get into the beats of different music will often dislike it or even begin to hate it.

my friends' parents listen to nothing but classical music and the really bad country music, even people who like country dislike it. My friend has grown to hate Classical music so much she gets really angry just hearing a small bit of it. On Black and White the Singing Stones 'sing' a bit of classical and she nearly strangled me!

Well, my bashing of Hip-hop is subject to a few qualifications.

I enjoyed the early rap in its genesis during the 80s, when it had more of a satiric quality to it. As Gopher rightfully observes, it has since evolved into a totally macho, nihilistic pile of garbage.

My disclaimer "no offence against black people" wasn't just a standard disclaimer but a sincere one.

I'm a huge fan of classic rock and some metal. Can you say Jimi Hendrix and Lenny Kravitz?

I also enjoy jazz and rhythm n' blues. I don't know anything about reggae beyond Bob Marley, but I enjoyed his tunes as well.

So, black people have produced many wonderful forms of music, but some have also produced one that is, bluntly stated, a cancer upon the planet. Everybody has potential for the good and the bad. It gets even worse if and when a suburbanite white kid who's had no real adversity in his life indulges in it. I don't know if Eminem fits this mould, and frankly I don't care enough to find out.

Yes, all those Boy bands. Where do I start? It was some years ago that I noted with tremendous satisfaction that the New Kids on the Block fell into oblivion. I believe it was when I started law school that I saw the first Back Street Boys video. "Oh No! Not again!!!" That was my exact response. I can't put my finger on it, but boy bands just leave this taste in my mouth of sugar or whatever on top, but loads of s*** underneath.

I think that there is decent music of every style. The problem with rap is that it is very popular (it's "pop" music) at the moment. So there are many "artists" who compete with each other. One could think that the competition would drive the people to make better music, but its the opposite actually. Under the pressure to be succesfull in the charts, the record companies produce as much as music as cheap as possible. The result is that the charts are full of the worst crap ever. (You wouldn't believe just how bad german raps are.)
The problem is not restricted on rap music. "Artists" like Avril Lavigne (who drops the fake "rock chick" attitude out of every pore), Linkin Park (incredibly un-creative), the numerous european dance/techno-projects (Take an advice: If you don't know "Scooter" already, just run away, if you hear the name the next time. It's spares you one of the worst musical sensations ever.) and naturally these boy/girlbands are other examples for the bad shape pop music is currently in.

But there ist always hope...I guess.

OK, rant is over. Sorry for stealing space. :D
