Rapist cannot be deported -- he's getting married

Our idiot government are terrified of upsetting foreigners, regardless of public feeling. They're also wondering why they've lost so much popularity in the past few years. What a load of crap!

 

An unfortunate side effect of the EU, I guess. At first, reading that the bride was a German citizen, it didn't make sense, but then the article reminded me that Germany and the UK are part of the EU now. In America, if you marry an American citizen, you have a right to live in the US. There may be very serious proceedings that can be done to deport you, but I don't think even that can happen (a lawyer may know better). I guess if the EU has similar laws, this is the consequence.

 

EU citizen can't generally be deported from another EU country I assume this includes their spouses. It's a bit nasty that the loophole used in such a manner, but I think the fact that he was not deported earlier is a bit more interesting. It might well be because Congo is in many places very dangerous and EU prohibits from deporting to countries where the deported would face death, torture or war.

 

At this point, I think the problem is that the UK let him stay to serve his time. Had they started the ball rolling to get him deported seven years ago, he'd be gone. That said, he isn't married yet. I see no reason that they couldn't just send him home. If his fiance really wants to marry him, she can travel back to Congo.

 

I suppose the thought behind it is that if you send someone to certain torture or death you might as well torture or kill them yourself and EU has strict rules against torture and the death penalty. I'm not sure how Congo qualifies in that regard though, I'm also not sure how Britain is interpreting the principle.

 

As far as the government is concerned human life is cheap, sentencing for rape, serious assult and murder is very short and often very liberal with prisoners being released having only served a fraction of their sentence.

money on the other hand, expect a serious hard line sentence after which the law will continue to dog you for the rest of your life.... unless you steal from a private citizen, in which case the CPS may not even prosecute you.

legislators and government are always the same, the right person for that job doesnt want to do it, so we end up with a system which is self serving and doesnt work.

 

For the most part, if you marry an American citizen you can't be deported. Unfortunately, there is a gentleman in the state north of me, Michigan, who is married to an American woman, but due to the fact that a group he had been affiliated with, and sought asylum in the US from, is now considered a terrorist group, they want him deported. Him and his family (he is an upstanding citizen who owns a restaurant, keeping people employed during this rough time) have been fighting for him to not be deported and while he's still here in the States, he's been jailed until a final decision can be reached. Unlike the rapist who gets to stay in the UK because he married a citizen, this man is fighting deportation because the group he had been affiliated with, then ran from, is now considered a terrorist group when it had not had that distinction back in the 1980's when he first came to the United States.

 

Another example of a legal system that has evolved to become totally dissassociated from decency, morality, and normalcy. What we have here, once again, is FAR too much focus on the rights of the perpetrator.
