Acceptance into the EU now? Can we expect hordes of Serbs to rush to Britain and elsewhere?

    A bit convenient, that.

Just weeks after some harsh words, and pressure from the Tribunal concerning Serbia's status and such....they bag him.

Might be just timing. But to me it smells like Osama.

Anyhow, here in the Land of the Free, the Great and the cool- Germany-, this is a bit meh, on the news coverage.

Seems that the bad and evil bacteria from Spain that was found in imported vegetable, and caused few deaths, is more important and evil than Mladic.

    Double meh.

It is arguable if belated justice, if any, is justice if any!

Oh, and don't worry about them Serbians going all 'Rule Britannia'. The Isle is too expensive.
And EU doesn't need more poor Balkan country to apply for multi-million band-aid ala Greece.

I doubt it... not any more so than currently I'd imagine.

Pfft, not like a few countries aren't doing their best to close their markets to Romanians and Bulgarians - I doubt Serbs would have it any easier. Frankly, I have my doubts whether the EU would admit anyone by the end of 2012, and I'd say 2015 is a better estimation. Include safeguards, red tape and the like, and Serbian plumbers, if they ever appear, won't come before 2020. Frankly, I doubt all that many would come.

This is generally speaking very good news. My only worry is that he won't survive the trial which means he won't live to see conviction which would be too bad. The reports of pro-Mladic protests in Serbian Bosnia-Herzegovina are also quite depressing and reminds that the country is still very much divided by the ethnic lines.

There is no justification or excuse for what Ratko Mladic did at Srebrenica, and other places. He is a war criminal and it is a good thing he will have to stand trial for what he did.

So he has other tribal nationalists protesting in his favour? Never mind that that was predictable, who cares?

After all, the ICTY isn't just targeting Serbs. Mladen Markac was sentenced to 18 years by the ICTY in April 2011. And also in April 2011, Ante Gotovina was sentenced to 24 years. Mladic will have them to keep his company. The final irony is that the will all sit in the same jail.

Probably not. They don't sit their sentences in Hague. They are distributed to jails around Europe. A few of them actually sit their sentences in Finland. I'm sure there are a few in Germany as well.

The problem is Ragusa that the protests aren't taking place in Serbia, they take place in Bosnia, and it's there where Mladic has his most fanatical supporters. I've watched interviews with a few experts in the area and they state that the support for Mladic in Republica Srprska in Bosnia. That's problematic for the entire country as a whole if they are to move on from the conflict and work as a country.

One man's villain is another man's hero.

Considering the amount of incriminating evidence against the guy, I feel rather confident that he'll get nailed. Try to weasel out of THAT!

Only that it starts to feel all too convenient for the old-skool war criminals to use their poor health as a defense. It's not like the defendant needs to do chin-ups every time a new witness is summoned. The trial isn't important JUST for Ratko's part, but for the thousands of families that ended up on the wrong side of the fence with him.

Figured I'd update this thread instead of starting a new one. The last fugitive searched by the ICTY Goran Hadzic has been captured. A little bit surprising that it came so quickly after the capture of Mladic. Someone within the government must have decided that it was time to hand in these people. Worrying that it took so long but certainly a very welcome development.

It's fair to assume that some people in charge knew about all the men in hiding. I also think, that them being in custody now and tried, won't change anything.
The world is past that, and looks forward to another doom.

Heh, I just watched a news crew interview some of the neighbours. Most if not all of them knew he was hiding there but made a point of telling the reporters that there's no money in the world that'd make them report their hero. When the population is like that, how can the politicians and the army be any different?

    Mladic is a Bosnian Serb-

The Serbs in Bosnia are among the hardliner loyalist where Mladic is concerned.
So my guess is, that the Central-Serbians weren't to keen to hand over Mladic (knowing where he hid) and loose with the Bosnian Kin.

I remember a TV interview where the Leader of the Bosnian Serbs stated, (after Ratko got bagged) that the Serbian Government may enter Bosnia at own risk.

Those are mentally two different kind of people!

    All in all they suck!

I agree. I wasn't all that excited when I heard the news. It's good that he eventually was caught, but he escaped justice for 20 years in the process. I kind of felt the same way with OBL. When you escape justice that long you sort of "got away with it". At least he got killed though.

^ Yeah, it really had that feel to it, when I heard about his arrest.
Or death ( in Osamas case ).
