    [​IMG] Ok, so I'm just wondering about the nice sized text block towards the top of the BoM. It looks something like this:
    To me, it looks really out of place cutting between the top news threads and the active member list. Is the BoM in need of gaining more members for a specific reason? :confused:

    Where else would you put it? I actually wanted to put it in a nice table, but due to UBB's retardedness I had to settle for just text for now. But still, I don't really see any better place to put it. The point is that it needs to be visible.

    I've been intending to put something like that up for years, just never got around to it. Since there's a history of lurkers taking a long time to sign up here, a bit of encouragement won't hurt.

    You can't deliver a longer message in a single sentence. I've kept it as short as I could as it is.

    I've put it in a smaller font now in any event, so it won't take up that much space.

    Boy you guys complain about the littlest things. My finger scrolls passed it without a strain.

    Considering some lurkers have BoM bookmarked and not the main SP page, a linked way to become a member feels helpful to me. It took me a while to figure out how to register using the main page and I have extremely low-end computer savviness.

    I like it. It doesn't bother me to see it up at the top. :)

    Ah, but I needed to provide some justification for a bold statement like that.

    And yes, I've also received a few mails over the years about how to actually register on the boards. That register link isn't the most obvious thing in the universe for many people, especially since it can be easily overlooked.

    Peeps, have you ever stopped to think what you would do, where you would go if Tal ever decided to stop running Socerers Place y BoM???

    Mayhap because I am ancient of days that thought crosses my mind from time to time. I have seen so many things come and go.

    I trust Tal not to post any obscenity or pornographic and so I don't care what he posts. If it helps keep SP around I'm all for it.

    So stop your petty gripping and use the scroll wheel or page down.

    TBH, Kitrax and teekc, you're coming across (imo) as whiny because Tal put something on the BoM that you don't want. Too bad; it's his site and he can do what he likes.

    Nakia+Kuemper - you're coming across as rabid Tal defenders who can't handle any criticism...

    It's not that it's a big issue or anything, but personally I dislike it, because it's bloating the BoM. And yes, Tal's reasons for wanting it there are equally valid as the complaints - but I wouldn't say moreso. I'm a fan of minimalism in design, however - while Tal has other design goals. That absolutely doesn't mean that we shouldn't point out when we dislike his design so he can look into modifying it so it works for everyone...

    You're blowing Kitrax and teekc's posts way out of proportion - as though they're trying to dictate what Tal does. They're not, they're expressing dissatisfaction with what Tal's doing - why shouldn't they if they're dissatisfied? It helped - now Tal knows of the criticisms and responded by making the font smaller - so now everyone can be relatively happy.

    I'm not dissatisfied. I was just wondering:
    Why now? - Answered
    and
    Is it permanent? - Un-answered

    I'd be dissatisfied is Tal stuck the TM forum at the bottom of the BoM...it's too far down to begin with! :almostmad:

    Tal, what of the possibility of puting that text block in some sort of a pop-up that is only displayed once a day...sort of like when you visit a UGO hosted website. Or an ad-bar within the forums of the BoM, especially in the forums where the most 'lurkers' are.

    But on the other hand, I'm one of the "rabid Tal defenders"...so in the end, whatever the Pink Dragon of Administration says, goes... :rolling:

    I'm all for minimalism in design. You only need to take a look at the SP site pages to see that. But this really doesn't have anything to do with design. It's two blocks of text that need to be put somewhere, and need to be visible. All in all, having them on a single page only is preferrable to having them on every page, don't you think?

    And yes, this is relatively permanent. It's a good thing, so I don't see why not. In the future, however, I'll be looking into disabling the first block for those who are already registered, and the second block for those who already have an SPS account. This is not possible with the current board software, but most likely will be in the future.

    Regarding the TM forum; those forums are vaguely sorted in order of popularity, so it's fine where it is. But of course, not every single person will ever be happy with any ordering, unfortunately. But considering it's a matter of a half or full scroll's difference, you'll live. ;)

    As for putting these info text blocks in pop-ups... many people block pops as it is, and we already have pop-under advertising on the site and the boards, so it's not a really good idea.

    Regarding the AoLS banner, that's been up for a few months now. :D

    We're covering a variety of topics here, aren't we. :shake: In any event, I prefer feedback to silent grudges, and SS is the place to comment on such things, so it's all good. Even despite people's objections I usually carry out what I think needs to be done, so no worries about me not implementing changes that I think will be beneficial overall.
