A group of US senators has proposed research into the effects of games on various aspects of children's development by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Here's a snip:

A nonpartisan group of four United States senators--Sam Brownback (R-KS), Joe Lieberman (D-CT), Hillary Clinton (D-NY), and Rick Santorum (R-PA)--have proposed legislation authorizing research into the effects of various media such as video games on the development of children. Press releases announcing the legislation were also sent out by Lieberman, and Clinton. The Children Media Research and Advancement Act (CAMRA) has been approved by the Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP), which means it will be going to the senate floor for consideration. One of the press releases stated that the act would be allocated $90M over five years, but this appears to be referring to a prior version of the study proposed in 2004.

Read the rest at Shacknews. There's more at GameSpot:

This "is a big step toward helping parents get the information they need about the effect of media on their children," Lieberman said after the vote by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Lieberman's two Republican cosponsors of the bill are senators Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and Sam Brownback of Kansas.

    Lieberman? Again? Ugh!

I once submitted a term paper back in college about how video games are so not influential to the negative emotions of an individual (somethign like that...aka, 'video games don't make people kill people')...but later, I realized that I was doomed to fail coz I forgot that I study in a University controlled by a group narrow minded individuals who believed that condoms are tools of the devil :bang:

Anyways, the way I see it...entertainment is evolving. When the TV was first invented and popularized, I will not be surprised if TV got the same criticisms many years ago...time's change my friend, it's best that people who still believe that Dungeons and Dragons promot devil worship to actually get outside and have a life...rather than just picking on some hobby that promotes creativity, exercies problem solving skills, expression and of course, team work. :)

Lieberman did something regarding to advertising responsbile some years ago. That is, some games, namely the mature rated ones, cannot be advertised on all media. And there is another one regarding games cannot have players killing police.

i don't care if games do have effect on children psychology. However, there has to be some bars barring children or teenagers not getting games not suitable for their age. i am sorry kids, if you want free speech to apply on you, you will need to abolish juvenile court and juvenile laws all together too.
