Is it just gold that a Paladin turns down for a reward or am I missing out on other valuable items. How much impact does turning these rewards down have on the game?

    Thanks

No, you turn down all rewards, including magical armour and weapons etc. All you get is XP. But that's only if it's the paladin that goes to collect the reward - if you have other party members, one of them will gladly take it.

There are a couple of times in the game where the reward is something REALLY useful, some magical piece of weaponry that you really need, and the speaker will insist that your paladin take it. I can't remember exactly where this happens.

A couple of quests are actually easier *with* a paladin because instead of running around doing "fetch" quests for someone before finding out they are evil, the paladin will announce that they smell a bad guy and attack right away. So I liked to use a paladin while accepting quests, and my rogue when announcing they were complete. :)

I guess it's the moonpriestess in distress, which forces the paladin to take the reward. Having a bard and a paladin can tremendously shorten walks in a certain forest. But rewards are no problem at all, as long you remember to report success with everyone except the paladin or monk. But I think nothing of real importance can be lost through not accepting quest-rewards. There mostly consist out of money or valuable but not game-critical items. The mercenary-payment will not be turned down by a paladin, iirc.
