[IMG] ... I just got back from the bank and found out that someone made a copy of my bank ATM/Debit card and emptied my account. It was a joint checking/savings account, and over the past weekend they took everything out.

I found out this morning when I tried to get enough money to pay for pancakes, and my card was denied. Went to the bank ... and saw the people had been living large on my dime.

    Game over baby!

[IMG] Wow Math, that gotta hurt. You have my sympathies... And one of the worst things was it was a joint account.

Can the bank not do anything? And aren't there supposed to be measures against this sort of thing?

With all of the world's techonology we still have the good ol' bank robbers working right under our noses and we're helpless to stop them.

Probably the worst feeling in this is the acute feeling of helplesness.

[IMG] Mathetais - That's awful! Have you heard anything from the bank yet? If someone takesover an account or uses a counterfeit card, the bank should be able to trace the transactions.

I hope things work out...Get in touch with me via e-mail if you need to!

Yes, your bank should be able to trace the transactions, and help you get at least some of your money back. Make whatever reports you can, and the bank may have other things they can do for you. This sort of thing hurts them too, so they're usually willing to help you.
Best of luck my friend, that is a downright rotten thing.

[IMG] Credit card fraud is terrible, my condolences. I wish you luck and that the cops and the bank are able to trace back the money, so you'll get it back - or at least that the goons who did it get caught.

Little update ... we went through a pile of approx 500 transactions and sifted which ones were ours and which were fraud. The bank has to contact each store to dispute the charges, and then each store has up to 45 days to confirm or deny our claim.

We should have 80% of our money in 72 hours, the rest will trickle in over the next few months.

Sorry to be throwing a pity part for myself, but this is where I vent, and until Tal bans me, your stuck with me. ;)

Below is an e-mail my wife put together that puts this latest set back in perspective ...
    --------------

    November 2001
Closing on our new house in the city.
(Necessity with the commute and long hours we never saw Tim)
Worldcom didn't pay us the commission check we were counting on for the downpayment.

    December
Paid the November commissions but not December.
We just assumed it was a glitch we could fix after the holiday.

    January
Things are going wonderful in the new place.
Having some trouble getting paid the December commissions.
Our realtor won't list the old house until $3-4000 in work is done.
No commission check (Total: no commisions December and January)

    February
Work still going on at the old house.
Still paying two mortgages and utilities.
No news or commission from Worldcom. (Total: Dec., Jan., and Feb)
In case your thinking he must have a huge base pay, Tim is on a 70%
    commission plan.

    March
We managed to pay all our bills except the work on the old house.
We get a lein on the house but it is on the market.
    Still no commissions.
We have to take out a loan on our 401K but we still manage to pay the bills.

    April
Still paying two mortgages and utilties.
We do get paid some of what we have been owed.
    Mathetais's Compensation Plan gets changed.
He will be paid half of what he earned last year no matter what he sells.
We start looking for new jobs.

    May
    Still two mortgages.
    Paid partial commission.
Repay the $3800 to the remodeler and have the lein removed from our house.
    Several Job Leads/offers.

    June
    Still two mortgages.
    Same partial commissions.
Terrible offer on the house but we take it anyway. Lose our shirts.
All the job offers fall through

    July
    One mortgage.
We survived one of the most stressful things ever.
Commissions are scheduled to be normal.
    Worldcom files bankruptcy.

    Happy Anniversary!

Monday the 29th we go to the ATM and we have insufficient funds.
I go home and check the bank statement that came saturday.
Before I am to the third page (of six) I run to the phone to call the bank.
They tell us to come to the office immediately.
We turn off the cards--hold on the account.
Despite Worldcom, Gene Aeyers etc. we had managed to accumulate $4000.
But someone used small purchases over the period of a month and wiped us out.
They did not even have our cards so the bank can't figure out how it
    happened.

After all that, you might be asking how did you have any money?
That is what this is all about. I don't know?
I was sitting feeling sorry for myself when I realized that
It's a miracle that we had any money in that account for someone to steal.
It's a miracle that we still have a home.
It's a miracle that we still have a job.

Through all of this (that felt like it was killing us at the time), God gave
us so much. The Devil is working over time on us for some reason.
We put our stock in a God that will not let us Fall.
    ---------

That's my life. If it wasn't for this group I'd be a bit CRAZY I think ;) :thumb:

[IMG] That's terrible Mat! Really sorry to hear about that. With any luck the bank should be able to clear this up (thank the good lord for corporate insurance!). It wasn't your actual card they used so it was in no way your fault, and the bank's insurance should cover it.

BTW - I just have to say that you and your family are showing an amazing attitude through all of this.

I can't really think of anything to say, except :(

I'm really sorry to hear about this on top of all your existing troubles.

What a pain. At least things are clearing up for you. Keep smiling, stay positive. You're Mat. You can handle it.

Just got back from the bank, and the good news is that we'll get 100% of our money back.

The bad news is that they took away the 72 hour thing and cannot give a firm deadline.

More good news, Friday is payday, so we'll get all the bills paid, just barely.

All in all, I think its a miracle that we've made it so far. The e-mail I posted above reflects that I think. Despite all adversity, God is good, all the time.

(Yeah, that is cheesy and spiritual, but I'm a paladin/cleric, what did you expect?? :holy: )

WEll, I'm glad to hear that the bank is helping you work things out. Luckily, merchants and banks have gotten a lot better about helping credit fraud victims.

So are a far stronger person than I think I could ever be. I'd have gone stark raving mad if I had to deal with the same things you have for the past half year. More power to you, my friend.

Mat, that's awful!! Good luck in getting your money back.

But honestly, how can you say the lord taketh away? You're one of the most virtuous people I know, the lord wouldn't "taketh".

This is the work of human criminals and I hope that human law gives 'em what they deserve (any heavenly justice against them'd be a long time in coming....)

Math, There are a bunch of things you need to do in order to make sure that this doesn't happen again. If they got your check card # they probably have a considerable amount of information on you that you wish them not to know. Especially if you haven't had the card physically stolen.

I had my black backpack stolen at a park last month with all of my identifying info in it. Needless to say I went through hours of work calling different agencies to make sure I wasn't going to be a victim of identity theft. If you need some info on what to do, pm me.
