[IMG] I'm playing a neutral evil swashbuckler.

My question is (for the genuine role players), how should I go about the rival guild scene?

Being evil, I'd imagine I should side with Bohdi, but I'm pretty sure that opposing the Shadow Thieves would rob (pardon the pun) me of the chance to be the guildmaster of Mae'var's lair.

How much of a role should my alignment play when choosing between these paths? Does it even matter?

Being evil doesn't mean you automatically side with the undead! The Shadow Thieves can be considered evil as well.

When you're evil you are basically out for yourself; concern for others doesn't motivate you.

Yeah, I kinda figured as much. I'm just trying to put more effort into being a legitimate role-player, rather than just a game-player.

Ever in persuit of perfection... :D

Then if ye be lawful good ye're supposed to say that mr. Jansen was actually trying to sell ye a flasher... It still be illegal merchandise in illegal place and in illegal manner, 'tis be unacceptable fer lawful good ones

It's a good thing you pointed that out, because it sure wasn't lacking in obviousness.

Aye, indeed. Pity alignment plays not a' important role in BG2... But fer reasons of roleplaying most o' us keep to chaotic good, fer never i've seen a person who gave Jan up to authorities, no matter what his alignment be

I did, just because I found him to be so irritating. I can't stand Jan, and I just happened to be a paladin, so, too bad for him, he got a one way trip to pen. MUHAHAHAHA

Hey... my Paladin did give Jan up to the authorities. Of course, I never intended on having him in my party either, so it wasn't a real OOC problem for me to stay IC. You dig?

But as for the question, just because your character is evil doesn't mean he has to side with evil. As a matter of fact, "clever evil" would side with good as long as he could pull it off, because he knows that evil will stab you in the back at the earliest opportunity. It's *far* easier to swindle those who want to believe that other people are good at heart than those who know that the world is populated with miscreant scumbuckets like yourself. *grin*

Now that I'm a goblin, aren't I supposed to make some "hey wow" statement about it? Consider this my obligatory statement to that effect. Nyah. Avatar-envy is for twits.

"But you said Darth Vader betrayed and murdered my father. "
"From a certain point of view. Ayecaptain/ Lothar/ Hawkwinter you are going to have to realize that a great many things depend on your point of view."

To be a paladin is to be a judge almost in one's own right. you must fully realize the situation and see both sides of the incident to make a worthy judgement. Many a time a life will hang in the balance. To an untrained squire Jan is simply breaking the law. To a fully trained and battle hardened paladin that has looked into the face of evil and knows its stench, Jan is simply a harmless peddler trying to provide turnips for the dinner table of his family, and upon fully reading the situation and Jan's remorse can fairly judge that a warning will suffice and perhaps escorting him to the edge of the district.

It doesn't matter what alignment you have 'cause youre a thief and thiefs cant side with the vamps at all.

Methinks that if law says to throw flasher distributors behind the bars, a LG char shall do so, fer if a flasher is sold it can do harm t' innocent people. If ye think that
"Jan is simply a harmless peddler trying to provide turnips for the dinner table of his family" then ye be not LG, but NG (or maybe CG) and ye do good because ye thought's 'tis good, even cause the law says 'tis not
    ('tis me opinion still)

Where in the hell did all of this come from? I was asking about evil thieves. Furthermore, it's clearly a question of the protagonist's alignment, not of Jan's. Jan has absolutely nothing to do with it, at all. For Christ's sake, keep the subject matter relevant.

Why does the word 'pinhead' come to mind?!?

Was the sarcasm of my previous post completely lost on you?

I wish my NE thief could have sided with the vamps- it would have been more fun then the stupid guildleader that seemed to think Mikuul was some pansy level two catburgler.

Also- some people say "There's no honor amoung thiefs", but I don't think that's true. Even a CE thief probaly wouldn't go against his guild- after all, he can't take out the Order of Radient Stupidness on his own, and who else would side with him but the thiefs (And Vicky, Korgan, Eddie, HD, Yoshi (wait, he is a thief), Jan (ugg, anothet thief.. doubt he's a shadow one, tho), and maybe Imoen).

And you should know that topics hardly evre say totally on subject. =P Now, on the matter of Jannn...
A LG character would turn him over to the law, most likely- he is selling illegial devices, made to kill.
A LE might turn him over- or he would come up with someway that he wouldn't turn Jan in, he'de make him be a slave or something.
A LN character would 99% turn him over- although he probaly wouldn't accept any money (he might, though...). LN believes in laws above all (Vhalior! Vhalior!), so that's an obvious choice.
Almost all Chaotic characters would keep 'em, although a CE character might throw him in prison, to make him and the jailkeeper suffer.. as for NG, he would probaly do what he thought was right, TN would have some weird debate about balance, and NE would do whatever he felt like. =P

hmmm... if u ask me.. missing the thieves guild sure spoils it for u if u wanna be a role-player.. coz then u can really play ur role.. i mean.. i loved it being the Lord of Nalia's keep... felt so.... ahh... of course.. i played the good guy as the new Lord..

but if u noticed.. the Major Domo is of evil alignment while Captain Cernick is of neutral... i guess if i played the evil tyrant.. i wouldnt be overthrown by a rebellion that i feared coz my number 2 is just as evil
