Now that everyone is busy talking about Turkey and EU why don't we look at another EU candidate which will probably become a member in 2007, Romania. A land which has a completely corrupted court system, completely corrupted political system and completely corrupted police. A land which is probably even poorer than Turkey, and a completely horrible crime situation.

Now France is all about pulling this glorious democratic jewel of the east to the EU several years before Turkey. Is this right? Turkey may have problems with torture and human rights violations but at least their nation can hold it together and is making progress unlike Romania. I feel disgusted about how especially France is handling this, but hey they have excellent political and economic connections to Romania unlike to Turkey I guess that gives them the full moral right to pull Romania into the EU without any questioning....NOT!
    :bs:

Feel free to add links about the subject. I have watched a few programs about Romania and EU and read a few articles in papers but don't have any internet links to give, so if someone else has read about the subject in the net a link would be appreciated.

Well, frankly I quite don't understand the reason behind your rambling. Bulgaria and Rumania, like lots of other East-European countries, have serious internal troubles, where's the shoking news there. And the reason to care about the outskirts, the frontiers, should be obvious. Through this countries everything we don't want will come through. Illegal aliens and drugs and prostitutes (human-trade) and what else. The same reason why WE, I mean everyone, Swedes, Swiss (illiegal aliens don't bother about actual membership), the Irish and the Germans have to care for the periphery, like Lybia, Morroco and Rumania is, if we don't give a **** about them, why should they give a **** about us ? Why should they care about illegal aliens, crossing the Italian or Spanish border and in the end strand in Finland ?

Demographic projections suggest, that because of the internal problems and the resulting grim economic outlook, the population of Rumania and Bulgaria will soon be halfed through emmigration. Where do you think all this people will immigrate to ? To me, it seems like simple common sense dictates the better-off European countries to try and support the not-so-well-off borderlands in their development. Neglecting them might be unwise and very expensive in the end. Ha, and Rumanians traditionally immigrate to France, easy for you up there to mock the interest the French have there. Maybe the French should just put up some signs, please leave in direction Finland, all you illegal aliens....

How do I get this feeling that you are repeating "Finland" this, "Finland" that just to pull me into this discussion? :shake:

Anyway, if Romania can fulfill the demands, which they currently don't if what you say is true, welcome aboard. If not, better luck later. France can say whatever they want, but they cannot change the facts and I'm certain that our EU-ministers will be wide awake when the discussion begins. If not, media will kick their arse. ;)

Iago I think you misunderstood the point. I have nothing against helping eastern european countries and I have nothing against offering them a place in EU if they manage to fill up the criterias. Bulgaria and Rumania (as it apparently is spelled in English) are in no way the same thing. Bulgaria has improved a lot while Rumania is practically still in the same line as they were under the communist dictatorship. What France is trying to do is to pull Rumania to EU even if they would not fill up the criterias, and then they are crying about how Turkey which has improved a lot more than Rumania is not ready for EU for quite some time. It's the hipocracy(sp?), unfair treatment of Turkey and the fact that France wants Rumania to EU in 2007 even if it has not shown much signs of progress.

Spelling is definitely "Romania" in English.
I know little about the situation in Romania & Bulgaria but I can't say I'm surprised that there is a certain amount of hypocrisy in European politics.
