Now this is interesting. One of the great touts behind Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that it allows you to submit a larger and stronger opponent one on one. One of the reasons why Royce was selected for this first UFC instead of Rickson was to prove this very point.

One might think that this pops the BJJ balloon somewhat. On the other hand, it makes sense. Now that most MMAs are in the know with BJJ, or at least how to avoid its traps and such (e.g. a wrestler who can avoid getting taken down like Kanzushi 'Gracie Hunter' Sakuraba), strength will matter more than it did when Royce made his early waves.

Leaves me wondering what Helio Gracie thinks.

Royce just did that because the Gracies cant seem to handle the fact that Saku destroyed their extremely one-dimensional form of BJJ. There are really no great Gracie fighters, the only one really is Renzo, and he isn't one-dimensional like the others.

Effective BJJ in MMA requires more than just BJJ training, which is why Brazilian Top Team has such a better record than Gracie BJJ.

Team Gracie still has some great fighters (Nick Diaz comes to mind) but the Gracies themselves are nothing special, and they certainly aren't the best BJJ-based organization, nor are they the best at pure BJJ.

BJJ dominated early, but now that the sport has evolved, it has left the single dicipline behind. Rather than adapt, Gracie has taken to building beyond normal. Kinda sad really...
