Rumsfeld's Resignation Called For - Again

    This topic was all over the news in the US yesterday, so I thought I'd post about it and get some opinions.

    Resignation Request

    It appears that he's coming under fire this tme from "fostering an atmosphere of arrogance" amongst the top Pentagon officials. I'm not sure that's grounds for resignation (not that there aren't other more valid ones). Anyways, I'm not sure how I feel about it either way.

    Well, If six of your closest generals, two of which were commanders of the Iraq war, come back and tell you that we do not like the way that you are managing the war. I think that's plenty of ground to ask for his resignation.

    But then, if the president has your back then who cares, right?

    In addition to that, I bet that there is more Officials that do not agree with Rumsfeld, but they fear that they will have to retired just like the general currently complaining.

    This won't go anywhere, unfortunately. Rumsfeld has tendered his resignation to Bush twice already, and both times Bush refused to accept it. Either Bush is so dependent on him in military matters that the entire operation would fall apart should he leave, or Bush wants to keep him in place to shoulder the brunt of all future criticism of the Iraq debacle to protect his legacy. After all, if Bush replaces him now, and Iraq continues to get worse, he's the one to blame. If Rummie stays throughout Bush's presidency, Bush can claim it's all HIS fault.

    Either way, Rumsfeld's job is secure for as long as Bush's is.

    Officially, the job of Sec Def.

    Unofficially, Rumsfeld is the scapegoat if Iraq continues to go to sh*t ("Well, you see, the Secretary of Defense sets military policy, not the President. It's not my doing"), and the poster boy if all ends up rosy ("Aren't you glad I kept Rumsfeld in place to see us through to victory? My doing.").
